[https://nvbugs/6858845][fix] Let no-KV-cache runners use FlashInfer attention - #20901
trtllm-agent wants to merge 4 commits into
Conversation
…attention NoKVCacheRunner.prepare_inputs asserted that the attention metadata was Vanilla or TRTLLM before calling prepare() without a KV cache manager. FlashInferAttentionMetadata.prepare() has its own kv_cache_manager=None branch for context-only batches, and the no-KV- cache runner only schedules context requests. Because setup_attn_metadata always builds the metadata with kv_cache_manager=None, prepare_inputs raised on every call when attn_backend was FLASHINFER. Remove the runner-side type assertion, so each backend's prepare() handles the no-KV-cache case itself. Tests: - test_mm_encoder_standalone.py: new test_encoder_flashinfer_attention_matches_trtllm (Qwen2.5-VL-3B encoder-only, FLASHINFER vs TRTLLM embeddings, cosine > 0.99). - test_no_kv_cache.py: drop the monkeypatch that made the stub metadata pass the removed assertion. No-KV-cache metadata handling tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/engine/runners/no_kv_cache.py, tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/engine/runners/test_no_kv_cache.py |
The runner proceeds with metadata preparation without the type assertion. The test helper no longer patches the removed type reference. |
Multimodal encoder backend comparison

Compare encoder outputs across backends tests/unittest/_torch/multimodal/test_mm_encoder_standalone.py |
Adds a helper to encode images with a selected backend. The test skips if FlashInfer or the checkpoint is unavailable; otherwise, it checks output counts, shapes, and cosine similarity above 0.99. |

The test name says that
FLASHINFERmatchesTRTLLM, but the assertion checks only direction. A uniformly scaledFLASHINFERembedding can pass because cosine similarity is scale-invariant. These embeddings becomeinputs_embeds, so magnitude is part of the observable behavior. Add an elementwise or norm comparison with tolerances appropriate to the model dtype and attention backends.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

FlashInfer's prepare() already has its own no-KV-cache branch: it asserts num_generations == 0 and plans the ragged prefill wrapper. Removing the runner-side type check therefore leaves validation to each backend, which matches how Vanilla and TRTLLM already work. The test_no_kv_cache.py change is useful: without the monkeypatch, the existing prepare_inputs tests now run with a metadata type that is neither Vanilla nor TRTLLM.
Gap: as far as I can tell, test_encoder_flashinfer_attention_matches_trtllm won't run in CI. The only test_mm_encoder_standalone.py entries in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/ are -k-filtered selections in l0_b200.yml (lines 251 and 254), and neither one matches this test. Please add an entry (for example -k "test_encoder_flashinfer_attention_matches_trtllm" on a stage that already runs this file) so a regression would be caught. The inline comment has the details.
Untested by this PR: the pooling runner with FLASHINFER (it uses the same code path), and TP>1.

…FlashInfer or the model is missing get_attention_backend() falls back to TRTLLM when FlashInfer cannot be imported, so test_encoder_flashinfer_attention_matches_trtllm would compare TRTLLM against itself and pass without covering the FLASHINFER path. Skip the test in that case, and when the Qwen2.5-VL-3B-Instruct checkpoint is not present under the model root, instead of failing during encoder setup. Signed-off-by: berryz <berryz@nvidia.com>

Description
Fixes https://nvbugs/6858845.
NoKVCacheRunner.prepare_inputsasserted that the attention metadata wasVanillaAttentionMetadataorTrtllmAttentionMetadatabefore callingprepare()without a KV cache manager. Becausesetup_attn_metadataalways builds that metadata withkv_cache_manager=None, the assertion ran on every call. So withattn_backend: FLASHINFER, the multimodal encoder-only runner raised on every forward. The pooling runner uses the sameprepare_inputs.FlashInferAttentionMetadata.prepare()already has its ownkv_cache_manager is Nonebranch for context-only batches. It assertsnum_generations == 0and plans the ragged prefill wrapper, and the no-KV-cache runner only schedules context requests. This change removes the runner-side type assertion, so each backend's
prepare()handles the no-KV-cache case itself. The Vanilla and TRTLLM paths are unchanged.Test Coverage
tests/unittest/_torch/multimodal/test_mm_encoder_standalone.py::test_encoder_flashinfer_attention_matches_trtllm(new): runs the Qwen2.5-VL-3B multimodal encoder withTRTLLMand withFLASHINFERattention on the three test images. It checks that the embedding shapes match and that the cosine similarity is above 0.99. On H200 it fails before this change (RequestErrorfrom the removed assertion) and passes after.tests/unittest/_torch/executor/engine/test_no_kv_cache.py: removes the monkeypatch that let the stub metadata pass the removed assertion. The existingprepare_inputstests now run with a metadata type that is neither Vanilla nor TRTLLM.tests/unittest/_torch/multimodal/test_mm_encoder_standalone.pyandtests/unittest/_torch/executor/engineall pass (239 passed).Dev Engineer Review
NoKVCacheRunnernow prepares attention metadata without restricting its type whenkv_cache_managerisNone. This allows backend-specificprepare()methods to handle no-KV-cache metadata. The reported Vanilla and TRTLLM behavior is unchanged. No current review findings were supplied. CI status is reported as
FAILURE; check the failed tests and rerun CI after fixes.QA Engineer Review
The changes add a FlashInfer-versus-TRTLLM encoder comparison and adjust the no-KV-cache test helper to use generic metadata. The comparison checks output count, embedding shape, and cosine similarity above
0.99; it skips when FlashInfer or the model checkpoint is unavailable. The new encoder test does not appear as a selector in the inspected
test-db/or manual-QA lists. Reported H200 test results are author-provided; the available CI result is a failure. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/engine/runners/no_kv_cache.py— Verify that each supported attention backend prepares metadata correctly when there is no KV-cache manager. The change removes the metadata type restriction from this path.tests/unittest/_torch/multimodal/test_mm_encoder_standalone.py— Adds a Qwen2.5-VL-3B encoder comparison for FlashInfer and TRTLLM attention. The test is not listed by selector in the inspected CI or manual-QA lists.tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/engine/runners/test_no_kv_cache.py— Uses generic test metadata in the preparation tests. These tests exercise the no-KV-cache input-preparation path; no test-list entry for this file was identified.
