The same rejection is new inrun_prefill(Line 2684),warmup_varlen(Line 2859),warmup_prefill(Line 3027), and_varlen_launcher(Line 1563). Stamp on behalf of runtime devs, delegating proper review to @NVIDIA/trt-llm-topk-devs
…plates Native BF16 input for the GVR V2 self-sampling top-K (decode and prefill) in the shared FP32/BF16 kernel templates, on main (c492171, includes NVIDIA#20106 and NVIDIA#20998). - Dtype, vector width and the BF16 refinement policies (bits-domain bins, bin proof, 16-bit key/index packing, packed loads, near-K complement kernel) are compile-time parameters; FP32 compiles the original code paths of main, including the deterministic mode and the NVIDIA#20998 reg_clus sampling and rescue. BF16-only temporaries of the register kernel use names (and non-deterministic guards) that the deterministic FP32 arm does not bind, so every dynamic-region join of the shared template stays type-stable. - BF16 register path: the NVIDIA#20106 register-path options (static K and row stride, staged output, warp-rank crossing-set shortcuts, rank gate 160) apply to the BF16 launches. The bits-domain window computes the bin of a value in integer arithmetic on its BF16 code, anchors on lane-0 samples published without a warp reduction, and predicts the side of zero from the sign bits of the packed words of the register batch (the tail values stay out of the predictor, so the first barrier never waits for them); the packed kernel-head prefetch also loads the envelope's tail values, and a row whose vector window equals the envelope's takes them instead of a second dependent global load; the linear-bin BF16 register builds take the FP32 sampled bracket. - Host: BF16 routes, launcher cache, warmup and prefill entry points next to the FP32 ones. The BF16 router starts from the dispatch table before NVIDIA#20106 and takes its N <= 12K register rung for rows up to 256 (K=512: also 1024 and more) and the FP32 bin counts on the non-DEG register plans; its reg_clus plans carry K like the FP32 route since NVIDIA#20998. Deterministic mode stays FP32-only; the TopK module widens BF16 scores to an aligned FP32 view when deterministic selection is requested. - FP32 launcher requests (kernel family, compile arguments) are the same set as main's for the 9,746-case grid, the legacy entry, the MTP shapes and the prefill tiers; the PTX, cubin and SASS of the 189 compiled FP32 kernel configurations and of their 254 deterministic compiles are byte-identical to main at c492171. - TopK module and tests: BF16 decode and prefill coverage in test_gvr_selfsampling_topk.py and test_top_k.py (379 passed on B200); test_cute_dsl_gvr_topk_deterministic.py (59 passed on B200). FP16 indexer scores take the 16-bit arm of the four GVR V2 kernel templates next to BF16. The arm is shared: loads, widening, 16-bit codes and keys, ceilings and packed compares resolve per dtype at trace time, and a small constant table carries the FP16 values where the BF16 arithmetic relied on BF16 being the FP32 high half (-inf fills, window minimum, bin-proof guards, key spacing, NaN masks). FP32 and BF16 keep their generated code. FP16 codes are 8x denser than BF16 codes over the score range, so the window depths differ: - main / clus: survivors keyed by the raw FP16 halfword; the dense exact-code window of main uses 2,048 one-code bins on the 1024-thread builds. - reg_clus (K=2048): the window is anchored by a CTA-wide 512-bin histogram of the 1,024 samples; the bins run on the raw halfword and the register batch stays packed at every vector width. - reg / regimg: FP16 register launches take the FP32 linear bins. Two 16-bit route changes apply to BF16 as well: - K=2048 rows with N <= 12K take the register rung at every batch size above 148. - A code-radix register mode (two 8-bit-digit histogram passes over the register batch, cursor emit, no sampling or retry) is selected by geometry on the near-K Flash rows and the small-batch K=2048 rows with N <= 8,207, where it removes the bracket path's data-dependent slow cells. A module switch turns it off. Host: FP16 compile caches and launchers, FP16 routing policy, TopK dispatch of FP16 scores (deterministic mode widens to FP32 as for BF16). Tests: FP16 varlen / prefill / complement / CUDA Graph cases, the FP16 window and dense-window geometries, the code-radix mode forced on and off, FP16 edge patterns (subnormals, signed zeros, more than K +inf, 65504 at the K-th). Cold-L2 B200, 9,746 real indexer rows, speedup over FP32 (main at c492171): BF16 geomean 1.268x, FP16 geomean 1.235x; all cases exact. FP32 code: 189 / 254 / 288 / 392 configurations byte-identical to main. FP32 codegen is unchanged. - BF16 and FP16 register-path and routing changes, including a packed clamp window register kernel (BF16) and cluster code-radix register plans with a DSMEM histogram push (FP16; at most 8 rows at N~256K). - FP16 dense windows take 2x the bins on 256/512-thread builds. - New 16-bit helper modules: gvr_fp16_cross_prefix, gvr_fp16_primitives, packed_clamp_window_bf16, warp_histogram_scan_bf16. - The packed clamp window kernel needs a 64-element row stride; other rows take the register kernel. - _REG_CODE_RADIX_16BIT also gates the FP16 code-radix routes; _REG_CODE_RADIX_FORCE lets tests force either register mode. - Tests follow the new routing, geometry and cache keys; new unpadded single-row BF16 test. PR_Github #81843 [ run ] completed with state |
Description
Add native BF16 and FP16 support to the GVR V2 self-sampling top-K kernels (indexer scores). The branch is based on main at c492171, which includes #20106 and #20998.
TopKroutes BF16 and FP16 scores toselfsampling_topk_run_varlen; withgvr_deterministicit widens them (exactly) into a float4-aligned FP32 view, since the deterministic engine is FP32-only. Prefill: the engine (run_prefill,prefill_ready,warmup_prefill) accepts BF16 and FP16; theTopKprefill gate stays FP32 and is opened in a follow-up PR.packed_clamp_window_bf16,warp_histogram_scan_bf16,gvr_fp16_primitivesandgvr_fp16_cross_prefix.16-bit kernel path
bf16x8/f16x8loads, packed 16-bit compares, 16-bit key/index packing. Values are widened in registers; output values stay FP32.BF16
Indexer scores are ~98% negative and the K-th value sits where the BF16 spacing is 2^-8..2^-7, so 12-22 elements typically tie at the K-th. With the FP32 bin scheme the whole-bin exit almost never fires and the kernel falls into the O(m^2) crossing-bin refinement. The BF16 paths therefore work on BF16 codes:
reg: bits-domain window with one BF16 code per bin, on the side of zero predicted from the sign bits of the register batch; the crossing bin is single-valued and emitted whole. Small-batch register rows at K=512/1024 can split the emit over 2 or 4 CTAs per row (partitioned emit: per-partition histogram copies and cursors). Most K=2048 register plans up to N~16K and many small-batch K=512/1024 register plans take the code-radix register mode (two 8-bit digit passes, cursor emit, no sampling).packed_clamp_window_bf16, register plans at K=512/1024/2048 for N 2K-16K and up to 64 rows): the row stays in registers as packed BF16 pairs; a sampled anchor places a window of raw codes on the K-th side of zero and out-of-window codes clamp into the edge bins, so the histogram is one pass of packed integer arithmetic; an interior crossing bin is emitted directly, otherwise the row takes an exact radix select. It needs a 64-element row stride; other rows take theregkernel.reg_clus(K=2048): the same window with a block-gathered side predictor;clus: classification withsetp.ge.bf16x2against the BF16 ceiling of the threshold;main: the dense exact-code window anchored at the sampled K-th.FP16
FP16 codes are 8x denser than BF16 codes over the indexer score range, so one-code-per-bin windows that are wide in BF16 are narrow in FP16. FP16 therefore leans on the data-independent code-radix select:
reg_clusfor FP16; the N~256K cluster plan is used up to 8 rows (mainis faster at 16).main: the dense exact-code window uses 8x the bins on 1024-thread builds and 2x on 256/512-thread builds; the sample geometry is fixed at compile time from host-computed sizes (envelope-sized on 256-thread builds), and most unsplit builds record survivors with a packed 16-bit walk._REG_CODE_RADIX_16BITturns the code-radix register routes off (both dtypes);_REG_CODE_RADIX_FORCEforces either register mode for tests.Prefill
Decode and prefill share
GvrMainKernel. The prefill window base is rounded down to one 16-byte vector (4 FP32 / 8 16-bit elements) with the lead lanes masked. For 16-bit scores the row base is shifted to that boundary and thread 0's sample replaces its lead lanes with the first in-window lane. 16-bit prefill uses the 16-bit streaming plan and ther_const == 1tuning scalars of the decode launcher; the launcher cache is keyed by dtype.Performance (B200, cold L2)
9,746 real indexer rows (886 captures x 11 batch sizes 1..1024), nsys kernel time, 512 MiB L2 eviction before every timed call, 24 repetitions, FP32 and the 16-bit dtype interleaved in one process. FP32 = main at c492171. Speedup = FP32 time / 16-bit time; the BF16 and FP16 inputs are the FP32 capture cast once (round to nearest even). All cases are exact against
torch.topkon the 16-bit input (ties may differ in index).BF16
No case is below 1.0x.
BF16: breakdown by shape, batch size and kernel (cold L2, 9,746 cases)
Speedup = FP32 time / BF16 time per case; FP32 = main. The µs columns are the group median of the per-case mean kernel time. Speedup columns: geometric mean, minimum, maximum and the number of cases below 0.97x.
Speedup distribution
By K and N (N = indexer logits per row after compression)
By batch size (all K)
By kernel route (FP32 kernel -> BF16 kernel;
