What

responses_reasoning = "drop" now also removes web_search_call input items before a request reaches the openai_responses client that sets it:

[llm_clients.local]
format = "openai_responses"
base_url = "http://127.0.0.1:8080/v1"
responses_reasoning = "drop"
  • The default preserve_encrypted policy is unchanged, so hosted providers still receive the item.
  • No new config key. Documented next to responses_reasoning in docs/reference/toml_schema.md.

Why

Closes #954. A hosted Responses model's server-side web search is replayed by the client as a web_search_call input item. llama.cpp's /v1/responses cannot type it and answers 400 Cannot determine type of 'item'. Once a route sends such a conversation to a local target, including a local classifier or judge, every later turn of the session fails. The search's findings are in the assistant message after the item, so dropping it for that backend loses nothing the local model could use.

This PR first added a separate per-target omit_input_items list (#954 proposed that), because main had no per-client Responses replay policy at the time. #857 has since added responses_reasoning, and "drop" is the setting for exactly the backends that hit this, so the fix now extends it instead of adding a second knob.

Notes for reviewers

  • The change is in ResponsesReasoningPolicy::normalize_item (crates/libsy-llm-client/src/responses_reasoning.rs).
  • Test: responses_reasoning_policy_preserves_replay_history now replays a web_search_call and the assistant message after it. Under drop the item is removed and the message kept; under preserve_encrypted both are kept. This covers all three store settings and the extra_body input replacement. The test fails with the new branch removed.
  • cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings and cargo test --workspace (1127 passed) are clean locally.
  • We have run the same rule on a fork against a live llama.cpp backend since 2026-10-08. The failing 4-item request from [bug] Replayed web_search_call items 400 on Responses-compatible local servers #954 returns 200 with it.

Walkthrough

The change adds a per-target setting that removes configured item types from outbound OpenAI Responses requests. Target configuration validates and passes the setting to the HTTP backend. The client filters matching items from array-valued request input.

Adds the default-empty setting to backend and target configuration. Target validation rejects non-Responses clients and blank item types. Backend construction passes the setting through, and duplicate targets must agree on it. Tests and documentation cover configuration and examples.
Responses request filtering

Filters configured item types from array-valued input after provider-body sanitization. Empty omission sets and non-array input remain unchanged. A test verifies that web_search_call is omitted.

Explanation

Issue #954 requires a per-target option that makes replayed Responses input parseable by compatible local servers without changing hosted Responses behavior. The PR adds TargetConfig::omit_input_items, validates it for openai_responses, propagates it to HttpBackendConfig, and applies it after sanitize_openai_responses_provider_body to the top-level input array. The test omit_input_items_drops_a_replayed_hosted_web_search verifies that web_search_call is removed and message items remain. Configuration tests cover rejection on other client formats and duplicate-target consistency. Documentation covers the setting and its local-target use.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #954 and the stated PR intent. They add configuration plumbing, validation, duplicate-target checking, the Responses request filter, focused tests, and documentation for omit_input_items. The changes also initialize the new field in existing test configurations. No unrelated product behavior or unrelated feature is shown in the reviewed diff.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title describes the main behavior: removing replayed web_search_call items from Responses requests. It is narrower than the broader configurable omit_input_items feature, but it remains clearly related to the changeset.

@mrPronin Thanks for putting up this PR. Would you like to rebase it once and address any coderabbit comments. I will review it then.

…reasoning = "drop"

A conversation that ran a hosted web search replays it as a
`web_search_call` input item. A Responses-compatible local server such as
llama.cpp cannot type that item and answers 400 "Cannot determine type of
'item'", so once a route hands such a conversation to a local target
(including a local classifier or judge), every later request fails.

`responses_reasoning = "drop"` is the setting for exactly those backends,
so it now removes `web_search_call` items as well as reasoning. The search
results stay in the assistant message that follows the item. The default
`preserve_encrypted` policy is unchanged, so hosted providers still
receive the item.

@ayushag-nv Thanks! Rebased onto current main, and rescoped it while doing so: #857 has since added responses_reasoning, so instead of a new omit_input_items key the PR now makes responses_reasoning = "drop" also remove replayed web_search_call items (+22/−3, one test extended). Both CodeRabbit comments were about the removed key, so they no longer apply. Description updated; fmt, clippy and cargo test --workspace are clean. Ready for review.

79 upstream commits. Five conflicts:

- responses_reasoning.rs (add/add): upstream NVIDIA-NeMo#857 landed its own
  ResponsesReasoningPolicy (the official form of the NVIDIA-NeMo#483 we carried).
  Took upstream's version wholesale (stored-id replay when store != false,
  Anthropic envelope always dropped) and re-applied our two local rules:
  typeless {role, content} items are named "message", and Drop removes
  web_search_call (upstream PR NVIDIA-NeMo#955 proposes the same). Our unit tests kept.
- client.rs: kept our tool-image and custom-tool policies on ModelConfig and
  both test helpers; took upstream's assertions for the reasoning replay
  test (NVIDIA-NeMo#857 semantics replace NVIDIA-NeMo#483's). The reasoning pass now runs twice,
  ours before the tool passes and upstream's after merge_extra_body; it is
  idempotent.
- lib.rs, switchyard-runner config.rs: unions.
- docs/getting_started.md: took upstream (our 3-line note is covered by
  toml_schema.md now).

Upstream's new preserved_codex_string_input test expects an array input
unchanged; prod names typeless items, so its expectation gains the type.
