WalkthroughThe Anthropic request codec now validates cache-control placement and TTLs. It captures cache markers during decoding and restores them during encoding. Unknown Anthropic content blocks with cache controls pass through as raw JSON. Tests cover reconstruction and invalid TTL ordering. ChangesAnthropic cache-control
Priority: ➖ Normal Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to In rare requests containing unsupported or malformed system or message blocks, cache markers may be dropped or moved when the request is rebuilt. This affects caching behavior only. It should be fixed or consciously accepted, but it is not a serious merge risk. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4 | ❌ 1❌ Failed checks (1 warning)

source block’s cache_control only with the decoded blocks produced from that

Decode source blocks individually or preserve their source indices, and retain
the existing single-block handling for non-array sources.

@dagardner-nv Do we need these many tests for this change ? Would it be possible to have them merged or cut down. |

Two comments on cache-marker preservation and the extra history copy.

[P2] Could we keep the cache annotations tied to their original blocks through IR edits? I reproduced two identical Continue messages, first marked 1h and later marked 5m: removing the older message makes the surviving one inherit 1h. Converting a raw image to the equivalent typed ImageSource::Base64 also drops its marker. Matching saved JSON can pick the wrong block or miss it after an edit.

nit: Do we need to store the full contents of every block here, including unmarked ones? With 100 messages and one cache marker, a 1.64 MB input produced another 1.65 MB of serialized extension data, even with preservation disabled. Could we keep the lookup metadata smaller? This adds another full history copy that subsequent request clones also carry.

Closing for now, the changes required to fully address the PR feedback likely requires re-thinking this and will likely require changes to the protocol crate. The issue is the cache_control data was being stored under Off the top of my head I can think of two approaches likely:

What
Preserve nested Anthropic
cache_controlannotations on system blocks, message content blocks, and tool definitions when reconstructing Anthropic requests. Validate cache types and TTLs, including the requirement that one-hour markers precede five-minute markers in tools → system → messages order. Why
PR #727 preserved top-level cache controls; this change extends preservation to nested markers and retains system block boundaries.
Notes for reviewers
The implementation is contained in
crates/switchyard-translation/src/codecs/anthropic/buffered.rs. Nested annotations are stored in request extensions and restored onto reconstructed blocks. The existing Anthropic provenance flag guards restoration. The two added tests cover four valid TTL combinations with preservation enabled and disabled, and reject a five-minute tool marker followed by a one-hour system marker. An existing test also covers preserving a system marker when inserting a different target prompt.
