Define and apply reasoning policies crates/libsy-llm-client/src/responses_reasoning.rs, crates/libsy-llm-client/src/lib.rs, crates/libsy-llm-client/src/client.rs, crates/libsy-llm-client/README.md |
The client exports ResponsesReasoningPolicy and applies it to merged OpenAI Responses request bodies. The default keeps reasoning with encrypted content or an eligible stored ID, and clears retained reasoning content. Drop removes reasoning items. Tests cover store settings and input overrides. |
Configure and validate the policy crates/switchyard-runner/src/config.rs, crates/switchyard-server/tests/server.rs, docs/reference/toml_schema.md |
Runner configuration accepts the setting only for openai_responses clients and uses the default when unset. Configuration and server tests cover validation and upstream input. The reference documentation describes the setting and retained history items. |

-
Explanation
The title "fix(client): sanitize Responses reasoning replay per client" matches the main change. The changeset adds a per-client
ResponsesReasoningPolicy(defaultPreserveEncrypted, optionaldrop) that controls how reasoning items are replayed for OpenAI Responses requests, replacing the earlier store/encrypted-content-based sanitization. The title is concise, uses a conventional commit prefix, and names the scope (client), the behavior (sanitizing reasoning replay), and the granularity (per client). It does not mention the new config option or the store-related rule, but it does not need to cover every detail.

Explanation
The changes satisfy the coding requirements in [
#481].ResponsesReasoningPolicyprovides explicitPreserveEncryptedandDropmodes.PreserveEncryptedremoves plaintext or empty-encrypted reasoning, removes translated Anthropic thinking envelopes, retains encrypted content, and retains stored IDs unlessstoreisfalse. Retained reasoning gets an emptycontentarray. The normalizer preserves other input items and their order.send_encodedapplies the policy toopenai_responsesafterextra_bodymerging, so replacement input receives the policy. Runner configuration validates the setting foropenai_responsesand applies it to target models. The added client, runner, and server tests cover policy selection and replay behavior.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
-
Explanation
The changes stay within [
#481]. The policy type, Responses request normalization, client integration, runner configuration, documentation, and regression tests directly support target-specific reasoning handoff. The reviewed changes do not show unrelated production behavior.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 25.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 24 functions across 5 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Can you call this has_encrypted_content? Our policy is booleans should try to start with is_ or has_.

OpenAI also supports reasoning saved on its servers and referenced by an item ID. I think this PR would delete those even when there's no translation (so OpenAI to OpenAI).
This is configured by sending store: true. Codex does uses store: false, so it only applies to people using the OpenAI SDK or Responses API directly.
We should keep supporting saved reasoning references.
It's documented here, and may no longer apply, but I couldn't find any evidence that they removed it.

The field is still there in Codex:

responses_map_with_drop_policy? The drop is more important than the local.

What
Codex conversations can fail when a backend receives reasoning from an earlier provider. Normalize outgoing Responses history for each client while preserving messages and tool history.
Why
Fixes #481. The default keeps the provider's encrypted reasoning and removes plaintext and Switchyard's translated Anthropic reasoning. Stored IDs are kept unless the request sets
store: false. Setresponses_reasoning = "drop"for backends that cannot consume provider reasoning. The policy runs after target defaults so replacement history gets the same checks.Notes for reviewers
The HTTP regression covers both storage settings and input replacement using reasoning produced by the translation layer. It fails on
mainat 62efb77 and passes here.Validation passed: formatting, workspace and prefill-router Clippy and Rust tests, 198 Python tests plus two subtests, Ruff, mypy, and strict docs. One Rust test was ignored and two Python integration tests were deselected. Live provider tests were not run.
