fix(llm-client): fall back on retryable pre-answer stream errors - #1133

WalkthroughThe stream client now buffers initial events and classifies pre-answer provider errors. Tests cover fallback for retryable status codes, no fallback for invalid or late errors, and preservation of successful stream events. ChangesStreaming fallback

#1132] Directly linked issue. Coding requirements checked against the whole-PR diff (merge base e1c1b03 to head e1ce459).- First-event SSE 429/5xx use normal retry and fallback:
pre_answer_errorincrates/libsy-llm-client/src/client.rsreadserror.codefrom the preserved raw frame of an OpenAI Chat stream error. Whenmetrics::is_retryable_http_statusaccepts the code, it returnsLlmClientError::UpstreamHttp, so the existing retry and fallback path applies. Testpre_answer_retryable_stream_errors_fall_back_to_the_next_candidateinrun.rschecks calls[weak, strong]for codes 503 and 429. - Role-only prelude before a retryable error:
prepare_response_streamholds a role-onlyMessageStartevent (hold_role) and checks the next event. The same test covers role-then-503 and asserts fallback tostrongwith no duplicated output. - Auth/validation and unrecognized codes: code 401 and 400 are not retryable, so
pre_answer_errorreturnsNoneand the error stays in the stream. A string code ("busy") failsas_u64and is also not retried. Teststream_fallback_stops_at_answer_content_and_non_retryable_errorsasserts calls[weak]and an error at the caller. - Error after answer content: a content event sets
hold_roleto false and ends the prefix loop, so a later 503 is not classified. The same test uses a content-then-503 stream and asserts calls[weak]. - Valid streams and ordinary HTTP-error fallback: the valid role-then-content stream test asserts one call and forwards the role and text events in order. Ordinary HTTP 503 handling is outside the changed code path.
No unmet requirement found in the reviewed code. The source diff was read directly. The test results are taken from the PR description and were not re-run.

Explanation
All changes map to
#1132or support it.client.rs:prepare_response_streamnow buffers pre-answer events.first_event_overflowis replaced bypre_answer_error, which keeps the context-overflow classification and adds the retryable OpenAI Chat numeric-code path. The unusedstd::future::readyimport is removed. The error body is a fixed string, so upstream text is not added to HTTP error bodies.run.rs: the existing in-band overflow test changes its error code from 500 to 401. This is needed because 500 is now retryable. New tests cover the acceptance criteria listed in#1132.
No unrelated files are changed. The overflow path now also checks events held by the role-only prelude. This extends the earlier first-event-only check and stays within the issue scope.

A rabbit watched the first frames flow,
Then held the role before the show.
When 503 or 429 appeared,
The next candidate was called, not feared.
Good answer events stayed in the stream,
And errors late could not restart the dream.

What
Why
Closes #1132. A provider can commit HTTP 200 and then report overload in its first SSE frame. Previously Switchyard returned that error stream as a successful call and skipped a healthy fallback target.
Notes for reviewers
Start with
prepare_response_streamincrates/libsy-llm-client/src/client.rs. It uses the retained provider frame only for an OpenAI Chat numeric error code. The terminal error body is generic, so upstream error text is not newly added to logs or HTTP error bodies.Verified against a rebuilt native server and a loopback upstream: first-frame 503 (3/3), first-frame 429 (2/2), and role-only then 503 (3/3) reached the healthy target. Ordinary HTTP 503 fallback, valid streaming, non-retryable 401, and post-content 503 controls behaved as expected. No live-provider call was used.
Validation: full Rust workspace tests, workspace Clippy with warnings denied, formatting, Python Ruff, and Python mypy pass. The local Python pytest run remains unverified because the editable binding build could not fetch
openssl-srcwithin the available network window; CI will run it.Summary by CodeRabbit
