Pull Request

Summary

Currently, the book progress is saved on device, but is not synced with the server. This means that opening a book on a second device after reading on a first will open to page 1 on device 2.

2 things needed to be added:

  1. read the server progress when opening a book, jump to that page
  2. report the progress back to the server at the same time it's saved locally

Note: epubs are a more complicated beast as they use CFI to track progress (difficult), while comics/pdfs use page numbers (easy). I'll submit a new PR for epubs later once I get CFI figured out.

Changes Made

List the key changes included in this PR.

  • create getServerProgress function that reads an item's playback percentage and converts into a page number
  • create reportServerProgress function that converts the current page into a playback tick count to send to the server (if progress is 98% or above, mark item as played)
  • create updatePlayedPosition function in user_library_api so we can send the new playback tick count to the server
  • when opening a comic or pdf, compare the locally saved "current page" with the getServerProgress current page
  • when saving the new current page number locally, run reportServerProgress so local/server progress stay in sync

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • PDF and comic reading progress syncs with the server, making it easier to resume across devices. When opening a book, the app uses the furthest available position from the server and the saved or supplied position.
    • Items are marked as played when reading progress reaches 98% or the final page.
    • Reading continues uninterrupted if a server progress update fails.

The reader restores comic and PDF positions using server progress and reports playback positions through user-library APIs. Emby and Jellyfin send those positions to their user-data endpoints. The offline API validates the catalog server ID before updating stored playback position.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d46f3

Progress can remain ahead of a later backward seek, PDFs may reopen one page early, and offline completion may leave an item unplayed. Jellyfin book progress also depends on a percentage conversion that the inspected server path does not establish; resolve these sync gaps before relying on the feature.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to d46f3

Progress updates remain limited to library user data. The main concern is that offline writes do not retain the intended server identity throughout storage and synchronization. Completion recovery also remains incomplete. Broader privilege escalation is not demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new offline progress path checks that a catalog server ID exists, but discards it before updating progress. The repository update and synchronization acknowledgement match itemId alone. If downloaded rows from different servers share an item ID, reading one book can mutate another server's cached progress or clear its pending synchronization state. These repository behaviors predate the PR, but PDF/comic progress saves newly reach them. The collision precondition has not been reproduced or fully established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The conditional ownership issue is bounded to downloaded rows sharing an item ID in the same local database and their subsequent progress synchronization. It does not establish access to arbitrary accounts or servers. Server-filtered replay limits transmission, but cannot reverse an earlier itemId-only mutation.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If colliding server item IDs coexist in the cache, an offline book save can update both rows and make progress originating from one server eligible for another server's replay. Establishing an attacker-controlled path would additionally require showing how that cache state can be arranged. That prerequisite and an end-to-end exploit were not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Storage declares itemId plus serverId as row identity, and replay checks server ownership. In contrast, the offline catalog lookup, new progress mutation, and synchronization acknowledgement use itemId alone. The new nonempty-server check does not bind the selected client to the row being changed.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Recovery serialization does not order direct online reader writes. Multiple save callbacks can overlap, and reporting failures are swallowed without transferring ownership to a durable pending operation. The demonstrated consequences are progress consistency and recovery limitations, not an independently verified security attack.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Carry server-scoped item identity through offline lookup, mutation, conflict adoption and acknowledgement. Separately define whether account identity must also survive offline storage and replay, based on the supported account-switch lifecycle.

Send page progress as PlayedPercentage, not PlaybackPositionTicks.

PDF page changes and comic saves reach _reportServerProgress. Both server adapters serialize its value as PlaybackPositionTicks. Since one tick is 100 nanoseconds, (currentPage + 1) * 10000 records one millisecond per page, not a page number. The reader restores from PlayedPercentage, so the server can map the saved value back to a position near the first page.

Both APIs support PlayedPercentage in the user-data update body. Add a separate API method for it and send a 0–100 page percentage. Keep the existing markPlayed and zero-position behavior for completion.

Use one-based conversion for PDF progress.

When PlayedPercentage is 100%, _getServerProgress() returns N - 1 for a PDF with N pages. The PDF restoration path passes this value to a one-based page controller, so it can reopen on the penultimate page. The local maximum can mask this only when the local position is already at least N; clamping does not correct N - 1 because it is valid.

Both APIs support PlayedPercentage in the user-data update body. Add a separate API method for it and send a 0–100 page percentage.

@coderabbitai that is incorrect. The jellyfin API will not take an updated PlayedPercentage. The percentage is a derived value based on PlaybackPositionTicks. The only way to update progress for an item is sending the ticks. Sending the percentage will be ignored by the server. Trust me, I tried.

@jmawet You're right. I confused a returned field with a writable field. Jellyfin derives PlayedPercentage from PlaybackPositionTicks; sending PlayedPercentage does not update progress.

I withdraw the recommendation to add a percentage-update method. Using PlaybackPositionTicks is the correct approach for Jellyfin. Thanks for the correction and for testing this.

When PlayedPercentage is 100%, _getServerProgress() returns N - 1 for a PDF with N pages.

@coderabbitai When playback reaches 98% or above, the item is marked as played and the progress is set to 0. So in theory, there should be no situation in which getServerProgress returns N-1, it would just return 0. Am I correct or am I missing something?

@jmawet Yes—for a successful completion update, your reasoning is correct. The code calls markPlayed() and then resets PlaybackPositionTicks to 0 at Line 366–367. My 100% example did not account for that reset.

One detail: if the server returns PlayedPercentage == 0, _getServerProgress() returns -1, not 0, because it subtracts one at Line 312. PDF restoration then selects the greater of the local and server positions and clamps the result to at least page 1.

The PDF indexing concern still applies to incomplete books. For a 100-page PDF at 50%, _getServerProgress() returns 49. PDF navigation uses one-based page numbers, so the corresponding page should be 50. The completion reset does not cover that case.

So you are correct about the completed-book path. I withdraw the 100% example, but the subtraction still needs separate consideration for PDF progress.

@coderabbitai Restoring 1 page earlier is an intentional choice. Based on my testing, the values I have provided ensure consistent opening of the same page in practice.

lib/data/services/sync_service.dart:80-94
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Make replay cleanup conditional on the replayed value.

If replay sends value A while connectivity changes and the reader queues newer value B, the current ID-only remove deletes B after A succeeds. The server then keeps A, and B is not replayed. Remove the entry only when the queued value still matches the value that was sent.

🟠 Major · Make _reportServerProgress safe to call from fire-and-forget… · book_reader_screen.dart:347-350

lib/ui/screens/playback/book_reader_screen.dart:347-350
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Make _reportServerProgress safe to call from fire-and-forget paths.

_resolveClient() returns a non-nullable MediaServerClient, so the client == null check is dead code. The Dart analyzer will likely warn about it.

A bigger problem is the failure path. _saveComicState and the PDF debounce timer both call this method without a try/catch. Their callers do not await the result. A failed updatePlayedPosition or markPlayed call therefore throws an unhandled async error after the local save. The new markPlayed call also runs without a guard. A network error leaves the error uncaught.

Catch errors inside _reportServerProgress. Keep the local save independent of the server call.

Proposed fix
-    final client = _resolveClient();
-    final item = _item;
-    if (client == null || item == null) return;
+    final item = _item;
+    if (item == null) return;
+    final client = _resolveClient();

Then wrap the two API calls (Lines 363-370) in a try { ... } catch (e) { /* log and ignore */ } block.

Persist offline playback progress in the downloaded-item row.

updatePlayedPosition updates only metadata. A later catalog rebuild reads the old playbackPositionTicks row and restores the old PlayedPercentage. The local page preference can mask page loss on the same device, but catalog progress remains stale.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve newer queued positions during sync.

While syncPendingPlaybackPosition awaits the server update, an offline reader update can replace the same (serverId, itemId) entry. The current remove then deletes that newer entry after the older position succeeds. The next sync cannot send the newer position.

Remove the entry only when its value still matches the value that was sent.

🟡 Minor · Replay pending positions through the raw online client. · sync_service.dart:83-89

lib/data/services/sync_service.dart:83-89
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Replay pending positions through the raw online client.

A network drop can set canReachServer to false while the sync chain is still running. The registered wrapper then routes userLibraryApi.updatePlayedPosition to OfflineUserLibraryApi, which queues the entry and returns normally. syncPendingPlaybackPosition then removes that entry without sending it to the server. Pass the wrapper's onlineClient to this replay step.
