A relay host forwarded every voice frame from the application's Receive() loop, so any stall on the server's main thread was heard as voice breaking up, and worse the busier the server got. PluginInterface2 gains an opt-in OnReceiveNetworkThread() hook, called on RakPeer's update thread for each message from a connected system before it is queued for Receive(). RakVoice uses it through SetRelayFrameHandler(): a relay host with a handler takes ID_RAKVOICE_RELAY_DATA there and relays it without the application ever seeing it. Without a handler nothing changes. SimulatedNetwork::SetReceiveEnabled() lets tests stall a peer's Receive() while its update cycle keeps running.

WalkthroughPlugins can opt in to receive packets on the network thread before application queuing. RakVoice uses this callback to pass relay frames to a configured handler. New unit and live integration tests cover dispatch, packet ownership, and relay behavior. ChangesNetwork-thread receive and voice relay

Destroy the previous handler after releasing the mutex.
When SetRelayFrameHandler replaces or clears a handler, this assignment destroys the previous std::function target while relayFrameHandlerMutex is held. If a captured object's destructor calls SetRelayFrameHandler, the thread deadlocks. Swap the previous handler into a local variable under the mutex, then let the local variable be destroyed after the mutex is released. Based on learnings: avoid invoking external or user-supplied code while holding a mutex lock.

OnReceiveNetworkThread is now offered to every attached plugin, with no UsesNetworkThreadReceive() opt-in; the default lets the message continue to Receive(). SetRelayHost() takes the relay function itself, so a relay host always relays on the network thread and relay frames never reach Receive(). SetRelayFrameHandler() and the pass-through to the application loop are gone; SetRelayHost(nullptr) stops relaying.
Shutdown() calls OnRakPeerShutdown while the update thread is still running, so a plugin tearing down could race its own hook. Shutdown now stops the hook first, waiting out a call in flight; Startup() resumes it. AttachPlugin/DetachPlugin from inside the hook deadlocked on POSIX and would change the plugin lists Receive() walks on the user thread; they are now ignored there. SetRelayHost from inside the relay replaced the std::function while it ran; the change is now applied once it returns. Covers dispatch order, first-consumer-wins, double attach, late attach, unshifted ID_TIMESTAMP, spoofed origins, stragglers queued before becoming relay host, frame bursts, and the threaded guarantees: detach and SetRelayHost(nullptr) wait for a call in flight, no hook after shutdown starts, hook resumes after a restart.
The previous commit rewrote every line of peer.cpp from CRLF to LF. This puts the original line endings back; no content changes.
Adds tests for packet ownership (consumed and continued messages are freed, a kept one stays allocated until the plugin frees it), a sender seen by the hook before the application sees it connect, the relay marker being cleared after each call, the last of several in-relay SetRelayHost calls winning, relay-host state being visible through decoder channels (a cleared host decodes again, a host never decodes, even a straggler), and two threaded stress tests: attach/detach while messages flow, and toggling the relay while frames arrive. Every changed line was checked by mutation: each of 28 deliberate breaks makes at least one test fail, hang or crash. Documents that the hook can see a sender before the application has processed its connection, and must never wait on a thread that may be inside DetachPlugin(), Shutdown() or SetRelayHost().
Why
A relay host forwarded every voice frame from the application's
Receive()loop. On a game server that loop shares a thread with scripting and the game update, so any main-thread stall longer than the client jitter buffer was heard as voice breaking up — and stalls grow with player count, so voice got worse exactly when many people gathered. What
PluginInterface2::OnReceiveNetworkThread(Packet*)— offered to every attached plugin, on RakPeer's update thread, for each message from a connected system right before it would be queued forReceive(). ReturnRR_STOP_PROCESSING_AND_DEALLOCATEto consume,RR_STOP_PROCESSINGto take ownership,RR_CONTINUE_PROCESSING(the default) to queue as usual. Connection notifications are not routed through it. The list is mutex-guarded, so attach/detach is safe while running, and onceDetachPlugin()returns the plugin is never called again.RakVoice::SetRelayHost(std::function<void(Packet*)> relay)(wasSetRelayHost(bool)) — a relay host always relays on the network thread: eachID_RAKVOICE_RELAY_DATAis handed torelaythere (typically to callRelayFrame(), which only enqueues sends) and freed afterwards. Relay frames no longer reachReceive()on a relay host.SetRelayHost(nullptr)stops relaying and waits out an in-flight call.SimulatedNetwork::SetReceiveEnabled(peer, false)— runs a peer's update cycle without calling itsReceive(), modelling a stalled application thread.Breaking:
SetRelayHost(bool)is replaced, and relay hosts no longer see relay frames inReceive(). No wire-format change.Threading guarantees:
DetachPlugin()orSetRelayHost(nullptr)returns, the old hook/relay is not running and will not be called again.Shutdown()starts callingOnRakPeerShutdown()(an in-flight call is waited out first);Startup()resumes it.AttachPlugin/DetachPlugincalled from inside the hook are ignored (they would deadlock on POSIX and race the listsReceive()walks).SetRelayHostcalled from inside the relay takes effect when that call returns.Shutdown()must not be called from inside the hook.Tests
Tests/Unit/NetworkThreadReceiveTests.cpp(14): consume, pass-through, ownership, reply from the hook whileReceive()is stalled, plugin without the hook, detach, connection events not routed, attach order + first consumer wins, offered once / queued once, double attach, attach after connect,ID_TIMESTAMPunshifted, attach/detach from inside the hook ignored.Tests/Unit/RakVoiceNetworkThreadRelayTests.cpp(14): relays whileReceive()is stalled, relayed frames never reach the app, clearing stops relaying, only relay ids taken, empty/null packets, not a relay host, packet identity, replacing the relay, clear/replace from inside the relay, straggler dropped inOnReceive, spoofed origin not relayed, frame queued before becoming host dropped, 50-frame burst relayed in order.Tests/Integration/NetworkThreadReceiveLiveTests.cpp(3, real threads): detach waits for a hook mid-call, no hook once shutdown starts, hook resumes after restart.Tests/Integration/RakVoiceNetworkThreadRelayLiveTests.cpp(2): relays while the server never callsReceive(),SetRelayHost(nullptr)waits for a relay mid-call.The new live tests pass 20/20 with
--gtest_repeat. The shutdown test was checked against the unfixed code: it failed 10/10 there. Full suite 362/362 on Windows Debug (ctest -j 12), twice.Summary by CodeRabbit
