Adds sanitizer, build-cache and editor tooling, and fixes the bugs the sanitizers found on master. Reuses the parts of the closed PR #2 that still applied, ported to the current file layout.

Tooling

  • Presets (CMakePresets.json, schema 6 / CMake 3.25; the project itself still needs 3.21): new minimal, asan, tsan; test presets unit, integration and one per config; workflow presets, e.g. cmake --workflow --preset asan.
  • MAFIANET_SANITIZER (address+undefined or thread), applied to every target including fetched dependencies.
  • Compiler cache: sccache/ccache is used automatically when on PATH (MAFIANET_USE_COMPILER_CACHE, default ON; an explicit launcher wins).
  • CI: sccache (GitHub Actions cache) on the linux-native, linux-minimal, macOS and sanitizer jobs. New sanitizers (asan) job (ASan + UBSan, blocking) and sanitizers (tsan) job (advisory; RakNet's getters read connection state without locks by design, and those known races are baselined in ci/tsan.supp). Windows is unchanged: the Visual Studio generator has no launcher support.
  • Pinned dependencies: bzip2 was tracking master and is now pinned to a commit (1.0.8 has no CMake build). jansson moves from master to the v2.15.1 release, which builds with CMake 4.
  • Editor and environment: .editorconfig (no end_of_line: the tree mixes CRLF and LF), .clangd, .clang-tidy (diagnostics only), a .devcontainer for the Linux-only batched I/O paths and the sanitizers, and Dependabot for Actions, docs pip requirements and the Dockerfile.

Bugs found by the sanitizers

  • Null memcpy source in SendConnectionRequest when no password is set. UB, and under UBSan it aborted 63 of the 73 integration tests.
  • Thread lifecycle flags: RakPeer::endThreads / isMainLoopThreadActive and RNS2_Berkley::endThreads were volatile bool and are now std::atomic<bool>. LocklessUint32_t is now std::atomic<uint32_t>, which also fixes Increment/Decrement returning the old value on Linux, contrary to the header (no caller used it). GetTimeUS_Linux's lazy init is now a function-local static.
  • ThreadPool::Clear() returned with runThreadsMutex locked when the pool wasn't running. Every FileListTransfer destroyed a locked mutex, and a later lock from another thread blocked forever. New unit test fails without the fix.
  • SessionConfigLiveTests downcast a RakPeer to a test-only subclass it isn't an instance of. It now uses pointer-to-member access instead.

Not included

clang-format. The tree's style is too inconsistent: even a tuned config rewrote 5–25% of lines in recent hand-written files, so format-on-save would rewrite whole legacy files. That needs a separate decision about a one-time reformat.

Verification

  • macOS Debug: full suite 301/301.
  • Linux (devcontainer image, gcc): cmake --workflow --preset debug 301/301, Release 301/301.
  • Linux (clang, the exact CI preset commands): asan 228 unit + 73 integration clean; tsan 228 + 73 clean against the baseline.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved thread safety for shared counters and thread-status flags, and fixed a thread-pool cleanup path that could leave the pool locked.
    • Fixed handling of connection requests with empty passwords and improved consistency of Linux time measurements.
  • New Features

    • Added a nonblocking mutex lock attempt.
  • Developer Experience

    • Added documented build presets for minimal and sanitizer-enabled builds, compiler caching support, and a ready-to-use development container.
    • Expanded automated checks for concurrency issues and added tests for counter and thread-pool behavior.

bzip2 is pinned to the current master commit (1.0.8 has no CMake build);
jansson moves to the v2.15.1 release, which builds with CMake 4.
- MAFIANET_SANITIZER builds every target with -fsanitize=<list>.
- sccache/ccache is used as the compiler launcher when found on PATH
  (MAFIANET_USE_COMPILER_CACHE, on by default).
- Presets: minimal, asan, tsan, plus test presets (unit, integration,
per-config) and workflow presets, so 'cmake --workflow --preset asan'
configures, builds and tests in one command. Presets move to schema 6
(CMake 3.25); the project itself still needs only 3.21.
SendConnectionRequest copied passwordDataLength bytes from passwordData even
when no password is set, passing a null source to memcpy. That is undefined
behaviour even for a length of 0 (glibc declares the argument nonnull), and
UBSan aborts on it in every connecting integration test.
ThreadSanitizer reports races on all of these:

- RakPeer::endThreads / isMainLoopThreadActive and RNS2_Berkley::endThreads
were volatile bool spin-wait flags. volatile gives no happens-before edge
between the network thread and Startup/Shutdown; std::atomic<bool> does.
- LocklessUint32_t::GetValue read the counter without the barrier the
writers used. It is now std::atomic<uint32_t> on every platform, which
also fixes Increment/Decrement returning the old value on Linux, contrary
to the documented contract (no caller used the return value).
- GetTimeUS_Linux lazily initialised its time base through unsynchronised
globals; it now uses a function-local static.
…ependabot

- .editorconfig mirrors the tab/Allman source style. It sets no end_of_line:
the tree mixes CRLF and LF files.
- .clangd points at the debug preset's compile_commands.json; .clang-tidy is
a focused correctness/modernize set, diagnostics only.
- .devcontainer gives a Linux environment (ptrace and TSan-friendly seccomp)
for the Linux-only batched I/O paths and the sanitizer presets.
- Dependabot bumps GitHub Actions, the docs requirements and the Dockerfile
  base image monthly.
SendGateBypass and SlotInspector downcast the RakPeer returned by
GetInstance() to a test-only subclass it is not an instance of. That is
undefined behaviour, and UBSan's vptr check aborts four SessionConfigLive
tests on it. Naming the protected member through the derived class and
applying the pointer-to-member to the real RakPeer gives the same access
legally.
Clear() on a pool whose threads were never started (or already stopped)
returned with runThreadsMutex still locked. The destructor calls Clear(), so
every FileListTransfer destroyed a locked mutex, and any later call taking
the lock from another thread (WasStarted, StartThreads) blocked forever.
Found by ThreadSanitizer.
- sanitizers (asan): ASan + UBSan over both suites, blocking.
- sanitizers (tsan): TSan over both suites, advisory. RakNet's public getters
read network-thread state without locking by design; those races are
baselined in ci/tsan.supp so the job reports new ones.
- sccache backs the Linux, minimal, macOS and sanitizer builds with the
GitHub Actions cache. Windows (Visual Studio generator) has no launcher
  support and is unchanged.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds sanitizer and compiler-cache support to CMake and CI, updates development tooling and documentation, and changes several runtime paths involving atomic values, thread-pool locking, time initialization, and password copying.

Changes

Build and Development Tooling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build options and presets
CMakeLists.txt, CMakePresets.json, cmake/FetchDependencies.cmake
CMake adds sanitizer and compiler-cache options. Presets add minimal and sanitizer configurations, test settings, and configure-build-test workflows. Dependency declarations pin bzip2 and Jansson versions.
Build and sanitizer CI
.github/workflows/build.yml, ci/tsan.supp
Build workflows enable sccache and add ASan and TSan jobs that build presets, run tests, and upload JUnit reports. TSan suppressions cover the listed race-report stacks.
Developer setup and guidance
.clang-tidy, .clangd, .devcontainer/devcontainer.json, .editorconfig, .github/dependabot.yml, CLAUDE.md, docs/getting-started/building.rst
Development configuration adds clang-tidy and clangd settings, a Linux devcontainer, and EditorConfig rules. Documentation describes build options and sanitizer presets. Dependabot is configured for Actions, pip, and Docker updates.

Runtime and Test Correctness

Layer / File(s) Summary
Atomic counters and thread flags
Source/include/mafianet/lockless_types.h, Source/src/lockless_types.cpp, Source/include/mafianet/peer.h, Source/include/mafianet/socket2.h, Tests/Unit/LocklessTypesTests.cpp
LocklessUint32_t uses std::atomic storage and fetch operations. Selected RakPeer and RNS2_Berkley flags also use atomic types. Unit tests cover counter results, wraparound, and concurrent operations.
Thread-pool clear lock release
Source/include/mafianet/thread_pool.h, Tests/Unit/ThreadPoolTests.cpp
ThreadPool::Clear releases its mutex after clearing queues when threads are stopped. A unit test checks that WasStarted() completes after Clear() on an unstarted pool.
Time baseline and password-copy guards
Source/src/get_time.cpp, Source/src/peer.cpp
Linux time uses a function-local static baseline. Both SendConnectionRequest overloads skip password copying when the length is zero.
Integration-test peer access
Tests/Integration/SessionConfigLiveTests.cpp
Session configuration test helpers access RakPeer members through pointers-to-members instead of downcasting helper objects.

The CI guard that makes sanitizer reports fatal could silently stop scanning if the log file is not created. Adding a file-existence check is a small fix. There is no runtime impact on production code.

Make the unit test independent of elapsed time.

If the worker does not run within ten seconds, this assertion fails even when Clear() released the mutex. Replace the timed assertion with a deterministic lock-state check that still detects the retained lock. As per coding guidelines, unit tests must be “Hermetic and deterministic” with “no dependence on wall-clock time.”

…or TSan read

MSVC requires a local constexpr used in a lambda to be captured; make the
constants static. SessionConfigLive's SlotInspector reads the server's slot
state without a lock on purpose, which TSan reports on CI runners.
Both tests used one fixed path and removed it on setup and teardown, so
running them in parallel (the sanitizer jobs run the unit suite with
--parallel) let one delete the other's tree mid-walk.
Adds SimpleMutex::TryLock (pthread_mutex_trylock / TryEnterCriticalSection)
so the ThreadPool::Clear regression test checks the lock state directly
from a second thread instead of waiting up to ten seconds for a blocked
call. A pool that kept its lock is leaked rather than destroyed, since its
destructor would deadlock.
…nit preset jobs

Integration retries absorb loopback timing misses, but a sanitizer report
in a failed attempt could be hidden by a passing retry. ctest now writes
every attempt to a log, and a follow-up step fails on any sanitizer report
in it.

Drops "jobs": 0 from the unit test preset: CTest 3.29+ reads it as
unbounded parallelism, older versions as a single job.
