ScopeNox

This is a modified version of AeonNox by BigNoid.

It is made to suit people with CIH (Constant Image Height) setups that have the resolution at 1920x1080 and have the projector zoomed so that scope images fill the screen.

Using the normal Kodi skins in this case causes part of the skin to spill outside the scope frame onto walls.

This version of the skin contains all the GUI within an 800/820 pixel height.

Install

Download the zip file, then in Kodi go to Add-ons -> Install from zip file.

Latest release (Kodi 21 Omega): https://github.com/LLuth0r/ScopeNox-Updated/releases

No extra add-ons are needed for the scope features. The skin does its own zooming, scope masking and subtitle positioning.

Scope format

To switch between the 2.35 and 2.40 formats go to: System -> Appearance -> Skin -> Settings -> Scope -> Scope Format (Toggle)

Projector alignment

Set this to match how your projector zooms: System -> Appearance -> Skin -> Settings -> Scope -> Projector alignment.

  • Centre (default): the projector zooms around the middle of the picture. The GUI sits in the middle of the 1080 frame, where letterboxed scope movies are, with black bars above and below.
  • Top: the projector's zoom is anchored at the top edge of the picture (common with a fixed lens offset), so the top of the picture stays at the top of your screen and the rest spills below it. The GUI and every movie are moved to the top of the frame, with a single black bar below.
  • Bottom: the same for a zoom anchored at the bottom edge; everything moves to the bottom of the frame.

Menus, dialogs, the playback OSD and the video itself all move together (the video is shifted by scripts/autozoom.py when playback starts), so with the right setting only small adjustments are needed in System -> Display -> Video calibration. The calibration screen itself isn't shifted and the scope bars are hidden while it's open, so the corner markers mark the real edges of the 16:9 picture.

AutoZoom

AutoZoom is built into the skin (as of 1.2.1). Turn it on at System -> Appearance -> Skin -> Settings -> Scope -> AutoZoom. It reads the video stream's aspect ratio and zooms 16:9 (and 1.33 - 2.19) content out to fit the scope frame for the selected 2.35 / 2.40 format. Content 2.20 and wider is left alone and gets the scope mask. The separate scopenox-autozoom script is no longer needed.

Kodi takes the aspect ratio from the encoded frame. Scope movies stored as a 16:9 frame with the black bars as part of the picture (most Blu-ray and UHD rips) report 1.78, so AutoZoom zooms them out too. Press the zoom-in button on the playback menu once for such a movie: it goes back to 1.00 and AutoZoom remembers that for the movie, so it plays at full size from then on.

Remembered movies are stored by IMDb/TMDb id rather than file path, so they survive library rescans, file moves and PlexKodiConnect's changing stream URLs. TV episodes are remembered per show. Pressing zoom out forgets a movie again, and System -> Appearance -> Skin -> Settings -> Scope -> Clear saved AutoZoom settings forgets them all. AutoZoom runs from scripts/autozoom.py inside the skin; there is nothing extra to install.

Zoom and subtitle buttons

Turn on System -> Appearance -> Skin -> Settings -> Scope -> Show Zoom/Subtitle Buttons for Non-Scope to add these buttons to the playback menu:

  • Zoom out: fits the picture inside the scope frame (0.74 for 16:9 at 2.40, 0.76 at 2.35) and forgets any remembered zoom for the movie
  • Zoom in: back to full size (1.00), remembered for the movie
  • Save zoom: remembers whatever zoom is set right now for the movie. Use it when a movie needs something in between, e.g. a 1.90 IMAX release stored in a 16:9 frame: set about 0.81 with Kodi's own zoom (Video settings -> Zoom amount) to crop the thin bars, then press Save zoom. The button shows a bar while the movie has a remembered zoom.
  • Subtitles up / down: moves subtitles 1% of the screen height per press (see Subtitles below)

These used to need the ScopeNox-Tools add-on; they are now built into the skin.

Subtitles

Kodi places subtitles relative to the bottom of the whole 16:9 picture, which on a zoomed scope screen can be below the bottom of your screen. With System -> Appearance -> Skin -> Settings -> Scope -> Keep subtitles in the scope frame (on by default), the skin sets Kodi's subtitle vertical margin when a video starts, so subtitles sit just above the bottom of the scope frame for your projector alignment and scope format. Use the subtitles up / down buttons to fine-tune; the adjustment is remembered.

This only applies when Kodi's subtitle position (Settings -> Player -> Subtitles -> Position on screen) is "Bottom of screen", the default. Turn the setting off to manage the vertical margin yourself; the buttons then just nudge it.

Home menu: Dock style

System -> Appearance -> Skin -> Settings -> Home window -> Home menu style switches between the classic menu bar and Dock:

  • Dock: no bars or panels. The day name, date and time sit centred at the top of the frame, and the home menu is a row of outline icons floating near the bottom of the frame. The selected icon is bright, with its name and a theme-colour line under it; the submenu is a line of text under the icons.
  • Dock (dark text): the same with dark text and icons, for bright background artwork.

With a Dock style, the same Home window settings also offer Show date, Show time and Submenu always visible (otherwise press Down from the dock to show the submenu). Icons are picked from the menu item's type; for custom items (or to change any icon) use Configure home menu -> select the item -> Dock icon. Manage submenu there edits each item's submenu entries.

Watched status

Posters show a small ribbon with the watched status: an empty ring for unwatched, a half-filled ring for in progress (including TV shows with some episodes watched) and a filled ring with a check for watched. Choose which ones show at System -> Appearance -> Skin -> Settings -> Advanced -> Watched status indicator.

InfoWall poster size

System -> Appearance -> Skin -> Settings -> Advanced -> InfoWall poster size: Medium (3 rows, default), Large (2 rows) or Small (4 rows).

Player Process Info (PPI)

Player Process Info (PPI) shows what Kodi is doing with the current video: hardware decoding, decoder and pixel format, deinterlacing, source resolution / aspect ratio / FPS, HDR type (Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG or SDR), output display mode, audio decoder and channels, plus CPU and memory use. Open it with the PPI button on the playback OSD, or press 'O' on a keyboard during playback. The PPI screen sits inside the scope frame so none of it is cropped off on a zoomed CIH screen.

Development

The playback OSD button images in media/osd/modern are generated by tools/genosd.ps1 (Windows PowerShell). Add or change a button in its $set list, then run powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File tools\genosd.ps1. See the header of the script for details. The tools folder isn't used by Kodi and can be left out of release zips. Likewise tools/genoverlays.ps1 makes the watched-status ribbons (media/overlays/status) and tools/gendock.ps1 the Dock icons (media/dock; it needs the Material Symbols Rounded font, see its header).

Projector alignment works by wrapping every window's controls in a group carrying the conditional slide animations from scopeformat/Includes_ProjectorAlign.xml (ProjectorAlignShift). New windows need the same wrapper. Window-level s were tried first but stop working after a skin reload (which Skin Shortcuts triggers), and window-level conditional animations are ignored by Kodi.
