Wire the release workflow: tag push builds the bundle and publishes a GitHub Release #18

Question

Assemble the final release workflow: on tag v* (and workflow_dispatch), run the blocking validation, run the build script, package the bundle per the handoff design, and publish a GitHub Release with the artifacts and generated notes. Land the maintainer handoff doc alongside.

Blocked by both prototypes and the handoff decision.

Deliverable: .github/workflows/release.yml merged to main, plus one proof release (e.g. v1.7.6-rc1 as a prerelease) demonstrating the full path.

Resolved. The pipeline is live on main via PR #21, proven end-to-end by the v1.7.6-rc1 prerelease — tag push → blocking validation → bundle build → published release with redwizard-repo-{main,21omega,22piers}-v1.7.6-rc1.zip + merge_addons.py attached.

    What landed:

    • .github/workflows/release.yml — triggers on tag v* (hyphenated tags publish as prereleases) or workflow_dispatch with a tag input; re-runs the blocking checks, then tools/build_repo.py --bundle <tag>, then gh release create with generated notes.
    • tools/merge_addons.py — verified against the live server's main/addons.xml: 7 repo-owned entries replaced, 37 third-party entries untouched, .md5 sidecar recomputed correctly.
    • docs/RELEASING.md — both sides of the handoff: contributor (bump, tag, push) and maintainer (download changed channel zips, unpack, run merge, upload).
    • The build and CI prototypes were absorbed into production (PROTOTYPE markers dropped).

The rc1 prerelease can be deleted once the maintainer has eyeballed it, or left as the reference example. Cutting the first real release is just git tag v1.7.6 && git push origin v1.7.6 once desired.
