Summary

forgelm export now writes the <output>.sha256 sidecar that forgelm verify-gguf and the documentation have always described as something the exporter produces. It never did, so the sidecar check had nothing to compare unless the operator created the file by hand. The GGUF pages are corrected in the same change so they describe what the code does.

Related issues

Refs #83, #84, #85 — #84 (the missing sidecar) is resolved here; #83 (a clean verify-gguf exit on a magic-only check) and #85 (the invented verify-gguf output) are resolved in documentation only, so those issues stay open for the code half.

Changes

  • forgelm/export.py — after the conversion, writes <output>.sha256 in sha256sum binary-mode format (<hex> *<name>) through a temporary name and a rename. A sidecar that cannot be written fails the export (success=False, error_kind="runtime", so exit 2) and the digest is still reported; the alternative was a GGUF the documentation says is covered but is not. For a K-quant request the file written is the intermediate *.f16.gguf, so the sidecar belongs to that file. A model_integrity.json that cannot be updated is now logged as a warning, not at debug level.
  • docs/usermanuals/{en,tr}/deployment/gguf-export.md — real export output; K-quants described as the two-step operation they are (the default q4_k_m included), with the llama-quantize command the exporter prints; the invented "manifest" JSON replaced by the real exported_artifacts entry; the invented verify-gguf output (vocabulary and tokenizer checks that do not exist) replaced by the real one; "always merges LoRA" corrected to "only with --adapter".
  • docs/usermanuals/{en,tr}/deployment/verify-gguf.md, docs/reference/verify_gguf_subcommand{,-tr}.md, forgelm/verify/_gguf.py docstring — a clean exit proves only what ran (with neither the gguf package nor a sidecar, only the four magic bytes); the sidecar is described as corruption detection, not tamper evidence.
  • Tests — tests/test_export.py: the sidecar's content and format, that verify-gguf accepts it and catches a later change (independent of whether the optional gguf package is installed), that the suffix constant equals the one the verifier uses, the K-quant case, a failing write (no leftover temporary file; the export reports failure), and the warning on an unreadable manifest. A deliberately broken writer makes three of them fail.

Behaviour change to be aware of

An export whose sidecar cannot be written now exits 2. It practically cannot happen right after the GGUF was written to the same directory, but it is a change from "silently no sidecar".

Not done here (still open on the issues)

Summary by Sourcery

Write verifiable SHA-256 sidecars for GGUF exports and bring related documentation and tests in line with the implemented behavior.

New Features:

  • Write a SHA-256 sidecar alongside exported GGUF files for downstream integrity verification, including the intermediate file produced for K-quant requests.

Bug Fixes:

  • Make sidecar write failures fail the export with a runtime error while retaining the computed digest.
  • Report integrity-manifest update failures as warnings without failing an otherwise successful export.

Enhancements:

  • Align GGUF export and verification guidance with the actual supported checks, outputs, quantization workflow, and integrity guarantees.

Documentation:

  • Update the English and Turkish GGUF export and verification documentation to describe sidecars, K-quant follow-up steps, actual manifest data, and the limits of clean verification results.

Tests:

  • Add coverage for sidecar format and verifier compatibility, post-export mutation detection, K-quant output handling, write-failure cleanup, suffix consistency, and manifest warning behavior.

Chores:

  • Record the exporter and documentation corrections in the changelog.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • GGUF exports now include a SHA-256 checksum sidecar. For K-quant requests, the sidecar accompanies the intermediate F16 file.
  • Bug Fixes
    • An export now reports failure if its checksum sidecar cannot be written. Failures to update the integrity manifest are logged as warnings.
  • Documentation
    • Updated English and Turkish guides to clarify export steps, checksum coverage, and what a successful GGUF verification checks—including when optional metadata parsing or a sidecar is unavailable.

…mentation rely on

`forgelm export` computed the digest of the GGUF but never wrote `<output>.sha256`; the only writer in the package
was the checkpoint-tarball helper. `forgelm verify-gguf`, the user manual and the GGUF reference all describe the
sidecar as something the exporter produces, so the sidecar check had nothing to compare against unless the operator
created the file by hand.

The exporter now writes `<output>.sha256` in `sha256sum` binary-mode format (`<hex> *<name>`) through a temporary name
and a rename. A sidecar that cannot be written fails the export (exit 2, `error_kind="runtime"`) rather than leaving a
GGUF the documentation says is covered; the digest is still reported. For a K-quant request the file written is the
intermediate `*.f16.gguf`, so the sidecar belongs to that file. A `model_integrity.json` that cannot be updated is now
logged as a warning instead of at debug level.

The sidecar detects corruption and accidental change; it is not tamper evidence, and the pages now say so. The same
change rewrites the parts of the GGUF pages that described things the code does not do: the invented manifest and
`verify-gguf` output (vocabulary and tokenizer checks that do not exist), K-quants shown as one-step, "always merges
LoRA", and a clean `verify-gguf` exit presented as more than it proves. English and Turkish.

📝 Walkthrough

GGUF export now writes a SHA-256 sidecar and reports a runtime failure if it cannot write one. The English and Turkish guides describe direct and K-quant export, sidecar scope, and the checks performed by verify-gguf.

Changes: GGUF Export and Verification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Write sidecars during export
forgelm/export.py, tests/test_export.py, CHANGELOG.md
Export writes a sha256sum-format sidecar through a temporary file and atomic replacement. A write failure returns a runtime failure with the GGUF path, digest, and size. Tests cover sidecar format, verification, cleanup, K-quant output, and failure handling. Integrity-manifest update failures are logged as warnings.
Document direct and K-quant export
docs/usermanuals/{en,tr}/deployment/gguf-export.md
The guides describe direct f16 and q8_0 exports, the intermediate f16 file and manual quantization step for K-quants, sidecars, integrity records, and adapter behavior.
Clarify verification checks
docs/usermanuals/{en,tr}/deployment/verify-gguf.md, docs/usermanuals/{en,tr}/deployment/gguf-export.md, docs/reference/verify_gguf_subcommand.md, docs/reference/verify_gguf_subcommand-tr.md, forgelm/verify/_gguf.py, CHANGELOG.md
The guides state that metadata parsing is optional, that without metadata parsing or a sidecar a clean result confirms only the GGUF magic header, and that a sidecar does not prove authenticity.

Reviewer's Guide

This PR makes SHA-256 sidecars a real export artifact, written atomically for the actual output (including K-quant intermediate f16 files), with explicit failure handling and expanded tests. It also aligns English and Turkish documentation and verifier guidance with current behavior, including the limits of magic-only verification and the non-tamper-evident nature of adjacent sidecars.

replaces the output’s `.gguf` suffix with `.f16.gguf` (for example, `model.gguf`
becomes `model.f16.gguf`), rather than appending `.f16.gguf` to the full
filename. Apply the same correction to the Turkish mirror.
- Line 71: Qualify the `exported_artifacts` update as best-effort in the English

a write failure causes `_update_integrity_manifest` to log a warning, while
export succeeds without guaranteeing a manifest entry.

…est entry is best effort

Review findings on the export page: the K-quant intermediate is the output name with its .gguf suffix replaced by .f16.gguf
(model.gguf becomes model.f16.gguf), not <output>.f16.gguf appended; and the exported_artifacts entry is best effort, because
_update_integrity_manifest logs a warning and the export succeeds when model_integrity.json is not valid JSON or cannot be
written. English and Turkish.

…cument the converter requirement (#998)

## Summary

`forgelm export` now writes the SHA-256 sidecar that `forgelm
verify-gguf` and the documentation already assumed, and the GGUF
documentation describes what really happens. Two earlier pull requests
combined into one (#982 and #995, which will be closed as superseded);
the bot findings on #982 are folded in.

## Related issues

Refs #84, #85, #86 (docs), #83, #113. Making `verify-gguf` stricter than
"magic header + optional sidecar", and searching the locations real
llama-cpp-python wheels use for the converter, are separate changes and
stay open. The site strings that mention the sidecar are in a later pull
request.

## Changes

### Sidecar (was #982)

- `forgelm/export.py`: after the GGUF is written and hashed,
`<output>.sha256` is written in `sha256sum` format (`<digest> *<name>`)
through a temporary file and `os.replace`. A write failure returns
`success=False` (runtime error, exit 2) naming the GGUF path. For a
K-quant request the file written is the intermediate `.f16.gguf` and the
sidecar belongs to it. The `model_integrity.json` update failure is now
a `WARNING`, not `DEBUG`.
- The sidecar detects corruption and accidental change; it is **not**
tamper evidence, because whoever can replace the GGUF can replace the
sidecar next to it. The docs say so.
- `docs/usermanuals/{en,tr}/deployment/{gguf-export,verify-gguf}.md` and
`docs/reference/verify_gguf_subcommand{,-tr}.md`: real output, the
K-quant two-step flow, the real `exported_artifacts` JSON, what
`verify-gguf` checks and what it cannot, and the `--adapter` pitfall.
Review findings applied: the intermediate file is named by replacing
`.gguf` with `.f16.gguf`; the manifest entry is best effort.

### Converter script (was #995)

- `pip install 'forgelm[export]'` does not provide
`convert_hf_to_gguf.py`: no released llama-cpp-python wheel puts it
where ForgeLM searches (0.2.90 installs it under `bin/`, 0.3.x does not
ship it). The installation page, CLI reference, usage and quickstart
guides, the notebook, `pyproject.toml` comment and `export.py` docstring
now say to point `FORGELM_GGUF_CONVERTER` at the script in a llama.cpp
checkout; the upstream repository location, requirements path and
imports were checked.
- The not-found error message names `FORGELM_GGUF_CONVERTER` and a
llama.cpp checkout instead of advising a reinstall.

message**).
