Fixes #102.

forgelm purge --row-id now warns about the weights a run really leaves behind. Until now data.erasure_warning_memorisation fired only for a literal <--output-dir>/final_model/, so an erasure exited 0 with no warning for: a default invocation (--output-dir omitted, so the corpus directory is used), a non-default training.final_model_dir, a run awaiting or refused human approval (its model exists only as <final_model_dir>.staging.<run_id>/), and a run whose auto-revert deleted the model but left checkpoint-*. The audit chain then recorded a completed erasure and a DPO could conclude no trained model held the data.

Follow-ups filed from this work: #1069 (retention horizon for checkpoint-*), #1070 (--check-policy and non-UTF-8 input), #1071 (exports are invisible to the memorisation check).

What changed

  • forgelm/cli/subcommands/_purge.py
    • The scan reports the model directory, its <final_model_dir>.staging[.<run_id>] siblings and checkpoint-* under --output-dir (no config needed) and, with --config, under training, every pipeline stage's training block and merge.output_dir. The staging name is the one ForgeTrainer writes (trainer.py: f"{final_path}.staging.{run_id}").
    • The event gains memorisation_artefact_paths; affected_run_ids comes from staging names, else from the audit logs of the scanned layouts.
    • --run-id --kind staging and --check-policy take the staging directory name from training.final_model_dir (a full config only, for --check-policy; a retention:-only file keeps the default final_model).
    • Robustness, because this code runs after the row is already erased: a directory or audit log that cannot be read is logged and skipped, a non-UTF-8 --config counts as "cannot be loaded", and run mode reads the config before it logs data.erasure_requested.
  • forgelm/cli/_config_load.py: _load_retention_and_config replaces _load_retention_policy and also returns the full config.
  • Docs, EN + TR: audit event catalog, purge reference, configuration reference, GDPR guide and manual, QMS risk plan and incident SOP, deployer guide, design deviations, --config help. They state that no retention horizon covers checkpoint-* and that --row-id matches id/row_id only.
  • Tests: 32 new test functions in tests/test_gdpr_erasure.py, built on the real trainer naming. Each fix is pinned by a test that fails without it.
  • CHANGELOG.md (### Fixed, names the restored contract) and tools/check_module_size.py (_purge.py budget 1224 → 1304 with its budget_history entry, per decision C-18).

Findings of #102

Finding Status
CR-A10-022 (memorisation warning looks only at <output_dir>/final_model) Resolved here; the implicit---output-dir WARNING came with #1050
CR-A10-042 (checkpoints, staging, merge output) Memorisation half resolved here. For retention, the finding allows documenting that checkpoints are outside it, which the docs now do; a real horizon is #1069, and exported models are #1071
DOC-D3B02-005 (--row-id matches the id field only) Resolved here
DOC-D1B04-022 (catalog trigger wording) Resolved here
TECH-T11-001, DOC-BLEGAL-024, DOC-BLEGAL-044, DOC-D3B02-021, DOC-D3B02-044, DOC-D3B02-048 Closed by #1050 (re-checked against the current text)

Decisions worth a look

  1. Config-free scan. --output-dir is scanned for checkpoint-* and staging directories without --config too, because the issue's own failure scenario passes no config.
  2. Symlinked entries are reported where they are named, not skipped: checkpoints are often symlinked to a scratch volume, the scan only stats and lists paths, and a dropped entry is a false "nothing found".
  3. Run mode reads --config (only for final_model_dir). A config that cannot be loaded logs a WARNING and the purge continues with the default name, which fails loudly (NoMatchingArtefacts, exit 1) rather than deleting the wrong thing.
  4. No retention horizon for checkpoint-* in this PR. It needs a new config field and purge --check-policy: add a retention horizon for checkpoint-* directories #1069 is still needs-triage.
  5. Limits that remain, and are documented: models you export or copy outside the scanned directories are invisible to the check (purge memorisation check cannot see exported GGUF files: forgelm export records only a basename and no audit event #1071 tracks recording export destinations); without --output-dir the audit chain and salt still sit next to the corpus (the WARNING from fix(docs): align GDPR, erasure, retention and PII documentation with the code; harden the user-manual schema guard #1050 says so).

Verification

Full CLAUDE.md gauntlet on ab5ce5f (with PYTHONPATH pinned to the checkout; check_import_origin confirms it): pytest 6707 passed / 98 skipped, tools coverage gate, mypy strict, ruff, audit catalog 47↔47, bilingual parity and code blocks, anchors, CLI help, all doc guards, module size, bandit (warn-only, none in touched files). Every scenario above was also reproduced end to end through the forgelm purge CLI against the previous revision and this one, and each fix was reverted in turn to confirm a new test goes red. An independent review pass found five more issues (an --output-dir / final_model_dir pairing gap, two crashes after the erasure, stale docs, Turkish wording); all are fixed in this commit.

Summary by Sourcery

Make row erasure warnings cover the trained-weight artefacts that runs can actually leave behind.

New Features:

  • Expand purge memorisation detection to report model, staging, checkpoint, pipeline-stage, and merge artefacts across configured training layouts.
  • Include absolute memorisation artefact paths and improved affected-run identification in erasure warning events.
  • Support configured non-default model directories for staging erasure and retention-policy reporting.

Bug Fixes:

  • Ensure row erasure warns when trained weights remain in default, custom, staging, checkpoint, or merge locations instead of silently completing.
  • Prevent unreadable directories, audit logs, and non-UTF-8 configuration files from aborting or falsely suppressing post-erasure warnings.
  • Ensure purge matches row identifiers only through the documented id or row_id fields.

Enhancements:

  • Refactor configuration loading to return both retention settings and the validated full configuration where available.
  • Document checkpoint retention limitations, memorisation-scan coverage, custom staging paths, and row-id semantics in English and Turkish guidance.

Documentation:

  • Update audit event, purge, configuration, GDPR, compliance, QMS, incident-response, and deployer documentation to reflect expanded artefact detection and configuration behavior.

Tests:

  • Add comprehensive coverage for model, staging, checkpoint, pipeline, merge, symlink, unreadable, custom-directory, retention, and configuration-loading scenarios.

Chores:

  • Update the changelog and module-size budget for the expanded purge implementation.

📝 Walkthrough

The purge command now scans model, staging, and checkpoint directories across default and configured layouts. It reports discovered artefact paths and affected run IDs. Run-scoped staging resolution and retention reporting use configured model-directory names when a full config is available.

Changes: Purge artefact checks and staging resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Memorisation artefact scan
forgelm/cli/subcommands/_purge.py, forgelm/cli/_config_load.py, tests/test_gdpr_erasure.py, docs/reference/*, docs/guides/*, docs/qms/*
The purge warning scans model, staging, and checkpoint-* directories under the output directory and configured training, pipeline, and merge layouts. Its payload includes discovered paths and affected run IDs. Tests cover configured layouts, scan failures, symlinks, audit-log run-ID discovery, and fallback behavior.
Configured staging and retention
forgelm/cli/subcommands/_purge.py, forgelm/cli/_config_load.py, forgelm/config.py, tests/test_gdpr_erasure.py, docs/reference/*, docs/guides/*
Run-scoped staging resolution and retention reporting use configured model-directory names. Retention-only configs use the default final_model name. Checkpoint directories are not included in retention reporting.
Purge and row-ID guidance
CHANGELOG.md, docs/design/gdpr_erasure.md, docs/usermanuals/*/compliance/*, docs/guides/iso_soc2_deployer_guide*, docs/qms/*
The documentation describes artefact scan scope and limitations, configuration-dependent staging behavior, and retention exclusions. It also clarifies that --row-id matches id or row_id, not row text or line numbers.

Comment thread forgelm/cli/subcommands/_purge.py
`forgelm purge --row-id` looked only for a literal `<--output-dir>/final_model/`,
so a default invocation, a non-default `training.final_model_dir`, a run awaiting
human approval (model only in `<final_model_dir>.staging.<run_id>/`) and a run
whose auto-revert left `checkpoint-*` all exited 0 with no
`data.erasure_warning_memorisation`. The first revision of this branch scanned
for a `.staging.*` name the trainer never writes and never checked the model
directory itself.

- Scan the model directory, its `<final_model_dir>.staging[.<run_id>]` siblings
and `checkpoint-*` under `--output-dir` (no config needed) and, with
  `--config`, under `training`, every `pipeline` stage's `training` block and
`merge.output_dir`; list them in `memorisation_artefact_paths`; read the run
ids from staging names, else from the audit logs of the scanned layouts.
- `--run-id --kind staging` and `--check-policy` take the staging directory name
from `training.final_model_dir` (full config only for the latter).
- Never abort after the row is erased: a directory or audit log that cannot be
read is logged and skipped, a non-UTF-8 `--config` is "cannot be loaded", and
run mode reads the config before `data.erasure_requested`.
- Docs (EN + TR): audit catalog, purge reference, configuration, GDPR guide and
manual, QMS, deployer guide, design deviations; state that no retention
horizon covers `checkpoint-*` and that `--row-id` matches `id`/`row_id` only.
- Tests: 32 new test functions built on the real trainer naming, each fix pinned
by one that fails without it. Module-size budget 1224 -> 1304 with its history
  entry.
