Site localization polish: Chinese punctuation, French spacing, Spanish capitalisation, unlocalized article badges, shared legal date #1056

Description

Summary

Conventions in the German, French, Spanish and Chinese site strings and in the shared legal metadata that a review of the GDPR copy turned up but that are not specific to it. None changes meaning; they make the localized site read as written by a native speaker and keep the legal pages honest.

Items

  1. Chinese punctuation. Many half-width , : ; ( ) next to CJK text in site/js/translations.js (the newer wizard strings already use full-width marks). Normalise to full-width in the native-review pass.
  2. French spacing. Plain spaces before : ; ? !. French typography uses a no-break space (U+00A0, or U+202F before ; ? !).
  3. Spanish capitalisation. "Artículo" is capitalised in running text in dozens of places (lower case is used in a few); the official Spanish text of the GDPR and the RAE style use lower case "artículo".
  4. Compliance badges. All 15 <span class="article-num"> badges in site/compliance.html (Article 9 ... Article 17, GDPR Art. 15, GDPR Art. 17) are hard-coded English and have no data-i18n key, so every locale shows them in English.
  5. Shared "last updated" date. common.legal.last_updated is one key used by both privacy.html and terms.html, so a change to one page moves the date shown on the other. Split it per page. (Pull request fix(docs): align GDPR, erasure, retention and PII documentation with the code; harden the user-manual schema guard #1050 moved it to 2026-10-22 because the privacy page changed.)

Acceptance criteria

  • Each item is done or consciously closed with a reason in the pull request.
  • node --test tests/site/*.test.cjs, tools/check_site_claims.py --strict and tools/check_site_chrome_parity.py stay green.

Context

Found while reviewing the site strings for #101. Related: #683, #684 (site sweeps), native review of the same strings in a separate issue.

    Triage (2026-10-22): accepted. Low · Wave 4 · parent #874 (Wave 4 · Docs). Size raised from S to M.

    Measured on development at 735a02f:

    1. Chinese: 487 half-width , : ; ( ) next to CJK characters in 232 zh keys (111 full-width marks in total).
    2. French: 149 plain spaces before : ; ? ! in 121 fr keys; no no-break space is used anywhere.
    3. Spanish: 21 mid-sentence "Artículo", 13 lower-case "artículo".
    4. All 15 article-num badges in site/compliance.html are hard-coded English, not only the two GDPR ones (description updated).
    5. common.legal.last_updated is used by both privacy.html and terms.html (both show 2026-10-22).

None of these is recorded in another issue (checked #683–#685, #770–#772, #797, #948). Items 1–3 are best done with the native review in #1055 / #948; items 4 and 5 are independent and can go first. Item 4 adds keys in all six locales, so the Turkish badge text needs a Turkish reader.
