Summary

Add a per-file layout descriptor to the FORM write path, recording form_layout_version and technologies.

This provides the foundation for future readers to identify the file layout and support files written by earlier FORM versions, without relying on configuration to determine the storage technologies.

The descriptor is written at finalize and uses a backend-specific representation, independent of the container machinery.

Reader support and backward compatibility are not implemented in this PR.

  • Code: Add a per-file FORM layout descriptor with the layout version (1.0) and the technologies used in that file.
  • Code: Write descriptors during finalization, before navigation tables and product dictionaries. Reject reserved FORM block names, unplanned product files or technologies, and files that mix major technologies.
  • Storage: Add descriptor-writing interfaces to the storage writer and storage file. Store descriptor entries in the generic storage file, and write them as a backend-native TList of TNamed objects in ROOT.
  • Tests: Add coverage for descriptor writing, per-file technology metadata, and invalid plans. Test ROOT descriptor writing with detached, non-writable, and writable files.
  • Scope: This adds write-path metadata only. Reader support and backward compatibility are not implemented.

Walkthrough

The persistence writer now records layout-version and technology metadata for planned output files. Storage interfaces and implementations carry the descriptor entries, and the ROOT-backed file writes them as named objects.

Changes: FORM persistence descriptors

Storage APIs accept descriptor entries. storage_file retains them, and root_tfile_imp writes them as TNamed objects in a TList. Tests cover storage and ROOT write behavior.

The persistence writer tracks planned technologies, validates technology and file plans, and writes layout-version and technology metadata during finalization. Tests cover metadata output and validation errors.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "form: add form layout descriptor to write path" names the main change: a per-file layout descriptor is added and written during finalize. The changeset adds descriptor constants, a write_descriptor path through storage and ROOT file classes, and finalize-time descriptor writing with technology validation. The title is specific and matches the PR objectives. It omits the validation rules, which is acceptable for a title.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 8 functions across 12 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Right. The original implementation used SetOwner(true) and new TNamed, but clang-tidy flagged the implicit ownership transfer. The current implementation uses a std::vector<TNamed> to manage lifetimes explicitly and avoid raw new.

Well that was a false positive :)

Agreed. The original implementation was correct. I changed it to avoid raw new, not because of an actual ownership issue.

What is the advantage of storing a TList here since a std::vector<std::pair<std::string, std::string>> can be stored directly into a TFile (both with and without an explicit dictionary for that vector instance)?

I tested this with ROOT 6.40.02. std::vector<std::pair<std::string, std::string>> requires a generated dictionary for writing, while TList works out of the box. More importantly, TList supports generic inspection through ROOT tools because it derives from TObject; an STL vector does not. Although std::map<std::string, std::string> also works without an explicit dictionary, inspecting it requires knowing its exact type. For a bootstrap descriptor, generic inspectability is useful, so I think TList is a reasonable choice for now.

Why is that an hindrance?

Which tool in particular is not able to inspect the other collections but is able to inspect the TList?

Fair points. In ROOT 6.40.02, WriteObject fails without a compiled CollectionProxy, even in an interpreted macro. A generated dictionary would solve this, but adds an extra dependency library and runtime rootmap resolution.

You're also right that I overstated the inspection advantage. TList mainly offers the convenience of generic TObject::Print().

Don't you already have dictionaries for other things? Independently adding a dictionary does not have add a library; it can be part of an existing library. The rootmap is not integral to a framework uses as it is more useful for the autoloading of the library and autoparsing the header files (and are also tiny files, so I am not sure what the concern is).
