fix(backup): one elapsed deadline from the calendar kill to the snapshot timeout receipt (Refs #1422) - #1647
Task marker:cloud-credit-20261105-brainlayer-spend-1422 Requested base:origin/main @ d6b82f04f6baa00081c9dc38afca2ada9d114c78 · Actual fetched base (fetched in the cloud container, 03:51Z):d6b82f04f6baa00081c9dc38afca2ada9d114c78 (matches) Head:claude/opus-5-5-spend-down-ar2ubh @ 920c1c32e3b964d92d9ac529332cd3223d60f5d2 (one commit on top of the base) Scope:#1422 only. Two files change, src/brainlayer/backup_daily.py (snapshot entrypoint + supervisor) and src/brainlayer/maintenance_calendar.py (_bounded_snapshot_step), plus tests. None of the files touched by #1637/#1639/#1640/#1641/#1642/#1643 are changed here.
Change and evidence
What and why
#1419 put the backup's internal deadline 60 s inside the calendar's, but each budget started on its own clock. The supervisor's child.wait(timeout=internal) starts only after env-run/Python startup and child creation. It then adds a fixed 10 s grace before the receipt. Nothing made startup + work + grace + receipt < calendar kill hold. When that sum reaches the kill, the calendar TERMs the group, forward_shutdown_signal raises SystemExit, and no BackupTimeoutError receipt is written. The proportional reserve (min(60, max(1, seconds // 4))) also let a 7 s window spawn a run with a 1 s reserve.
The fix:
One deadline, set by the calendar._bounded_snapshot_step exports BRAINLAYER_BACKUP_CALENDAR_DEADLINE_MONOTONIC = time.monotonic() + seconds. This is taken before the spawn, so it is never later than the kill _execute_step arms afterwards (end = clock() + budget, also time.monotonic for this non-held step).
Startup counts against that deadline. In main() (snapshot phase): work = floor(deadline - now - 60). If work < 1, it prints a reason and returns 75 without starting a child, which the calendar records as a deferral. Otherwise timeout_seconds = min(timeout_seconds, work). The supervised child runs the same code, so its own SIGALRM timer comes from the same deadline.
The supervisor waits against the deadline. The wait is bounded by deadline - 60 (after child creation). The SIGALRM→SIGKILL grace becomes min(10, deadline - now - 5), so it can never use up the receipt's slice.
The calendar always keeps the full reserve.internal = seconds - 60, and the step defers (None → code 75, nothing spawned) when no positive work fits beside it.
A deadline deferral from a child (75) does not raise the "backup failed" alert. The calendar's own deferral accounting handles it.
Behaviour without the calendar env var (manual runs, backup-daily, weekly maintenance) is unchanged.
Proof: the original production path, before and after
New tests/test_snapshot_elapsed_deadline.py drives the realmaintenance_calendar._bounded_snapshot_step → realbackup_daily.main() → real_supervise_backup_process. Both modules share a virtual monotonic clock. The backup child is a synthetic process object. The calendar's TERM is modelled the way the supervisor sees it: SystemExit(143) the instant the clock reaches the kill. So a receipt written at or after the kill counts as never written. One extra test uses a real OS child that ignores SIGALRM, with the reserve scaled down so it runs in about 3 s of wall time.

# fixed head
python -m pytest tests/test_snapshot_elapsed_deadline.py -q -> 11 passed

python -m pytest tests/test_snapshot_elapsed_deadline.py -q -> 11 failed
# the 7 before/after rows above fail on their assertions with outcome 'killed:143' and receipts == []
# the other 4 fail because the new API is absent on old code
Mutant controls (each layer applied on the fixed head, then reverted):
M2, supervisor wait ignores the deadline (wait = timeout_seconds): 1 failed (real-child test; it overran by waiting 60 s)
M3, main() ignores startup (no work budget or refusal): 3 failed (refusal test + both child-timer cases)
M4, the old proportional calendar reserve restored: 3 failed (all three calendar-deferral cases)
Existing tests changed (intentionally)
test_snapshot_budget.py::test_tiny_window_… and two asserts in test_weekly_local_gate_r2.py pinned the old proportional reserve: a 57/58 s window at 05:59 still spawned with a 1–43 s budget. Under #1422 that window must defer. Those asserts now check None at 05:59, and the "runs with a bounded internal budget" check moves to 05:58 (118 s). Three monkeypatched _supervise_backup_process lambdas in test_snapshot_budget.py accept **kw for the new deadline keyword.
Focused checks and pre-push gate
ruff check + ruff format on the touched files: clean.
Repo pre-push gate, .githooks/pre-push with BRAINLAYER_PREPUSH_SCOPE=changed-only, run by the actual git push: passed. Pytest unit suite 306 passed, MCP registration 3 passed, isolated eval/hook routing 40 passed, bun 5 pass, fts5 shell PASS.
Environment note, recorded honestly: the first push attempt was blocked. There were 18 failures (container lacked the zstd binary) and 26 teardown errors in test_maintenance_calendar*.py (reap_groups: process group reap deadline exceeded; the container's PID 1 does not reap orphans). Both reproduced identically on untouched base d6b82f0 (18 failed / 26 errors). I fixed the environment rather than the gate: apt-get install zstd tini, then ran the push as tini -s -- git push (subreaper). The unchanged gate then passed. No --no-verify, no scope narrowing, no force-push.
UNRUN (not claimed)
No macOS / native / installed acceptance. Nothing ran under launchd, the real calendar LaunchAgent, env-run on a Mac, BrainBar, or a real database or Drive. All timing proof is virtual-clock plus one Linux real-process test.
The full 4,386-test suite and the Swift suite were not run (only the changed-only gate above).
GitHub CI and crash-sweep on this head have not been observed yet.
Cross-process monotonic comparability is assumed, not measured on macOS. The design relies on time.monotonic() being system-wide: Linux CLOCK_MONOTONIC; macOS mach absolute/uptime clock. A real calendar night on the M4/M1 is the acceptance test.
Risks
If a macOS Python's time.monotonic() were ever per-process (it is not, as far as I know), every snapshot would defer with 75 and say so in backup-snapshot.out.log. That is a loud failure, not a silent one. Worth one glance at the first real night's calendar ledger.
The deferral exit code 75 is now a possible backup_daily.main() return in the snapshot phase. The calendar already maps 75 to "deferred".
Refs #1422 (not Fixes: installed/native acceptance on a real calendar night is outstanding).
Crash sweep / feature batch
No crash-sweep label requested. This is a draft for review only; no batch, tag, or release claim.
Owner handoff → @Orc (routes while the BrainLayer lead is snoozed)
What to review: the 2-file source diff above (+46/−5 in backup_daily.py, +8/−1 in maintenance_calendar.py) and the new test harness. Points that need judgment: (a) always using the full 60 s reserve, which defers windows under 61 s; (b) the cross-process monotonic deadline; (c) skipping the job alert on a child's deadline deferral (75).
Still to do for acceptance: pair review (Codex↔Claude + CodeRabbit per AGENTS.md); CI green on this exact head; after a release, one real calendar night where a snapshot finishes or times out with a BackupTimeoutError row in the backup log before the calendar's finished … returncode=124, or a recorded deferred with reason maintenance-window on a late start.
Not done here, by instruction: no merge, no ready-for-review, no auto-merge, no tag, release, install or deploy, no Mac contact. The orchestrator's local collab.md is not mounted in the cloud container, so this PR body is the report for the dispatcher to import.
Cost meter: not available in-session; time-bounded instead (work 03:51Z–04:30Z).

Enforce one elapsed deadline from calendar kill to snapshot timeout receipt
The calendar now passes a single monotonic deadline to the snapshot step via an environment variable. The step environment and deadline math live in _bounded_snapshot_step in maintenance_calendar.py, which subtracts the full receipt reserve and omits the step when less than one second of work remains.
_supervise_backup_process in backup_daily.py limits the child wait and post-SIGALRM grace so the timeout receipt is written before the calendar kill time. Without a deadline, the existing timeout and 10-second grace behavior remains.
main defers with exit code 75 before spawning a child when startup leaves no work budget, and a calendar-deferred result no longer triggers the backup-failure alert.
Behavioral Change: snapshot windows shorter than the full receipt reserve plus one second of work now defer instead of running; a supervised child derives its timeout from the shared deadline rather than the configured default. Tests updated in test_weekly_local_gate_r2.py and new coverage in test_snapshot_elapsed_deadline.py.
The maintenance calendar now passes a monotonic deadline to snapshot backups. The backup process accounts for startup time, defers when insufficient work time remains, and limits supervision so timeout handling can finish before the deadline.
The calendar reserves the full receipt window, defers when less than one second remains for work, and passes a monotonic deadline to the snapshot step. Budget and scheduling tests reflect the updated limits.
Backup startup validates the deadline and defers if the remaining work budget is too small. The supervisor bounds its wait and signal grace period to leave time for a timeout receipt. Tests cover elapsed time, deferral, and receipt timing.
No actionable merge-blocking issue remains. Complete the planned macOS acceptance test as a normal validation step.

`_supervise_backup_process` has a cyclomatic complexity of 17 with "high" risk
A function with high cyclomatic complexity can be hard to understand and
maintain. Cyclomatic complexity is a software metric that measures the number of
independent paths through a function. A higher cyclomatic complexity indicates
that the function has more decision points and is more complex.

…hot timeout receipt (Refs #1422)
The calendar now hands backup-snapshot its kill instant on the system-wide monotonic clock,
taken before the spawn. The backup charges wrapper/Python startup and child creation against
it, sizes work as deadline - now - full 60 s reserve, bounds the SIGALRM grace by what remains
of the receipt window, and defers (exit 75, no child) when no positive work fits beside the
full reserve. The calendar likewise drops the proportional reserve that let 7 s and 57 s
windows spawn a run whose receipt could never beat the kill.

What and why
#1419 put the backup's internal deadline 60 s inside the calendar's, but each budget started on its own clock. The supervisor's
child.wait(timeout=internal)starts only after env-run/Python startup and child creation. It then adds a fixed 10 s grace before the receipt. Nothing madestartup + work + grace + receipt < calendar killhold. When that sum reaches the kill, the calendar TERMs the group,forward_shutdown_signalraisesSystemExit, and noBackupTimeoutErrorreceipt is written. The proportional reserve (min(60, max(1, seconds // 4))) also let a 7 s window spawn a run with a 1 s reserve. The fix:
_bounded_snapshot_stepexportsBRAINLAYER_BACKUP_CALENDAR_DEADLINE_MONOTONIC = time.monotonic() + seconds. This is taken before the spawn, so it is never later than the kill_execute_steparms afterwards (end = clock() + budget, alsotime.monotonicfor this non-held step).main()(snapshot phase):work = floor(deadline - now - 60). Ifwork < 1, it prints a reason and returns 75 without starting a child, which the calendar records as a deferral. Otherwisetimeout_seconds = min(timeout_seconds, work). The supervised child runs the same code, so its own SIGALRM timer comes from the same deadline.deadline - 60(after child creation). The SIGALRM→SIGKILL grace becomesmin(10, deadline - now - 5), so it can never use up the receipt's slice.internal = seconds - 60, and the step defers (None→ code 75, nothing spawned) when no positive work fits beside it.Behaviour without the calendar env var (manual runs,
backup-daily, weekly maintenance) is unchanged.Proof: the original production path, before and after

Both modules share a virtual monotonic clock. The backup child is a synthetic process object. The calendar's TERM is modelled the way the supervisor sees it:SystemExit(143)the instant the clock reaches the kill. So a receipt written at or after the kill counts as never written. One extra test uses a real OS child that ignores SIGALRM, with the reserve scaled down so it runs in about 3 s of wall time.d6b82f0)killed:143, 0 receiptskilled:143, 0 receiptskilled:143, 0 receiptskilled:143, 0 receiptsSNAPSHOT_TIMEOUT_SECONDS=7killed:143, 0 receiptskilled:143, 0 receiptskilled:143floor(deadline - now - 60); defers when latedeadlineparam)Commands (cloud container, Linux, Python 3.13 venv with

time.monotonic()being system-wide: LinuxCLOCK_MONOTONIC; macOS mach absolute/uptime clock. A real calendar night on the M4/M1 is the acceptance test.Risks
time.monotonic()were ever per-process (it is not, as far as I know), every snapshot would defer with 75 and say so inbackup-snapshot.out.log. That is a loud failure, not a silent one. Worth one glance at the first real night's calendar ledger.backup_daily.main()return in the snapshot phase. The calendar already maps 75 to "deferred".Refs #1422 (not

Enforce one elapsed deadline from calendar kill to snapshot timeout receipt
_bounded_snapshot_stepin maintenance_calendar.py, which subtracts the full receipt reserve and omits the step when less than one second of work remains._supervise_backup_processin backup_daily.py limits the child wait and post-SIGALRM grace so the timeout receipt is written before the calendar kill time. Without a deadline, the existing timeout and 10-second grace behavior remains.maindefers with exit code 75 before spawning a child when startup leaves no work budget, and a calendar-deferred result no longer triggers the backup-failure alert.Macroscope summarized 920c1c3.
