fix(search): read served compact brain_search rows in probes; legend names the implied project (Refs #1069) - #1638
Refs #1069. I used Refs, not Fixes, because the Swift half has not been compiled or run. See "UNRUN".
Change and evidence
Base and head. Requested base was origin/maind6b82f04f6baa00081c9dc38afca2ada9d114c78. I fetched it inside the cloud session before editing and got the same SHA, d6b82f0. The cloud checkout started on an older detached commit, eaefe65. I reset the topic branch onto the fetched main. Head is a8d7a818cae49a4a3a21d9e6693bed84b61e1e17 on claude/opus-5-5-worker-auth-7te7ux, one commit on top of d6b82f0.
State at start.#1069 was open with no assignee and no comments. I found no open PR that references it. I did not touch the owned drafts #1631, #1632, #1633, #1634 or #1636.
Scope. This PR changes formatter/consumer compatibility only. It is not a UI redesign and leaves the served tool contract unchanged.
What changed and why
Legend (brain-bar/Sources/BrainBar/Formatting/TextFormatter.swift:4). The legend changes from ID|score|project|date|source; S=summary P=preview to …; blank project=your project filter. The row format and IDs are unchanged.
BrainBarOperationReceipt.searchCount matches against the legend constant, so it follows the change automatically.
The two Swift tests that assert the legend as a literal string are updated.
New src/brainlayer/search_response.py, which reads the shapes BrainBar actually serves:
Compact detail: a ## "<q>" N/M header, then the legend, then - ID: id|score|project|date|source rows followed by S:/P: lines.
Swift full detail: a ## Search results for … - N of M shown header, then - ID: … | score: … rows followed by indented lines.
The hybrid helper's full-detail text, which still uses ### N. headings.
Only the first listing header counts. A row is a line that starts with - ID: . Both formatters flatten newlines out of previews and summaries, so a quoted header or - ID: inside retrieved text can never start a line.
Trailing notices (search mode, KG degraded, order) are not attached to any row.
When the response has structuredContent.results, its length is the count.
The module docstring records the ID delimiter rule from the issue: IDs must not contain | or a newline. IDs are still not escaped. No current ID format contains either character.
scripts/sprint_gate.search_result_rows now calls the new parser. That one function feeds two consumers:
search_visible in the deferred round-trip check.
scripts/ci_ratchet_table.collect_search_latency. Against a compact hybrid answer it raised "brain_search returned no results for a configured query", because the hybrid path always renders compact text.
health_check._canary_count(text, result) now uses the structuredContent or counted-row result.
Before: an unanchored - N of M shown regex that matched anywhere in the text.
The fallback for answers with no listing header is unchanged: Found N results, otherwise 1 if text.strip() else 0.
Canary semantics are unchanged: the canary checks liveness, an empty answer is healthy, and the call still uses num_results: 1.
Fail-first on the production call sites (old vs new)
I copied the changed scripts/sprint_gate.py and src/brainlayer/health_check.py aside, restored both from origin/main, and kept the new tests and module. Command:
pytest tests/test_search_response_1069.py tests/test_ci_ratchet_table.py -q -k "1069 or compact_hybrid or fallback_and_empty or canary or sprint"
(tests/test_search_response_1069.py was renamed to tests/test_search_response.py before commit.)
Old code: 5 failed, 16 passed.
test_sprint_gate_sees_a_marker_in_the_served_answer[compact] FAILED: search_visible returned False.
test_sprint_gate_sees_a_marker_in_the_served_answer[full] FAILED. The Swift full-detail rows are - ID: lines, not ### N., so the old parser matched nothing in either detail mode.
test_health_check_canary_counts_the_served_answer[compact 2 rows] FAILED with assert (7, 'results') == (2, 'results'). The 7 came from a - 7 of 9 shown quoted inside a preview.
test_health_check_canary_counts_the_served_answer[compact 3 rows] FAILED with assert (1, 'results') == (3, 'results'). The 1 is the non-empty fallback.
test_a_compact_hybrid_answer_is_measured_not_reported_empty FAILED with problem='search latency collector failed: RuntimeError: brain_search returned no results for a configured query'.
New code: all pass.
Mutant control. I changed the parser from line.startswith(ID_ROW) to ID_ROW in line, which would count - ID: anywhere in a line. Result: 3 failed, 16 passed. The failures were the count-shape, structured-vs-text and canary cases, all caused by the fake - ID: quoted inside a preview.
Fixtures mirror TextFormatterParityTests.swift byte for byte:
compact two rows: a blank filtered-project column, plus a preview quoting both old header shapes, a fake - ID: and a |
compact three rows followed by an FTS fallback notice
Swift full detail
zero results (0 of 0 shown)
KG facts section followed by compact output
the helper's ### 1. full text
structuredContent present, with and without results
the canary fallbacks: Found 0 results …, other non-empty text, and empty text
Focused checks at the exact head
ruff check src/ scripts/sprint_gate.py tests/test_search_response.py tests/test_ci_ratchet_table.py -> All checks passed
ruff format --check (5 touched py files) -> 5 files already formatted
pytest tests/test_search_response.py tests/test_sprint_gate.py tests/test_ci_ratchet_table.py \

tests/test_badge_state.py -m "not embedding_model and not integration and not live" -> 708 passed, 1 skipped
All fixtures are synthetic and in memory. The health-check runs use a tmp_path SQLite file built by the existing _make_db helper. No socket, production DB or BrainBar was touched.
Pre-push mapping. The new test file is named tests/test_search_response.py. The generic src/brainlayer/*.py → tests/test_<module>.py mapping in run_tests.sh will therefore pick it up for changed-only runs. core.hooksPath is not set in the cloud checkout, so the repo's pre-push hook did not run here. I did not bypass it.
UNRUN
Swift: no Swift toolchain in the Linux container, so the BrainBar build and the XCTest suites (TextFormatterParityTests, BrainBarOperationReceiptTests, and anything else that renders compact search output) did not run. The legend string and the two literal test assertions are edited only, not verified. I searched brain-bar/ for other literal legend assertions and found none.
Live acceptance: not run against a served BrainBar. That includes brainlayer health-check against the real socket, scripts/sprint_gate.py, and scripts/ci_ratchet_table.py search latency. No Mac, no installed services.
Full Python suite (4,386 tests) and the CI crash sweep: not run in the cloud. Only the focused suites above ran.
Cost meter: not available in the cloud session. I worked to the time limit instead; about 12 minutes of wall clock.
Risks
Canary count on helper text. If a helper full-text answer has a long header with N > 0 but no ### N. rows, the canary now counts 0 rows and reports empty. The old code read N from the header and reported results. Both states are healthy; no issue is raised either way.
Helper full text, ### N. rows. Splitting is the same as before, now capped at the header's N. If retrieved full content contains a line starting with ### <digit>., the rows can still split wrongly. This affects only detail: full on the hybrid path, and that behavior predates this PR.
Branch claude/opus-5-5-worker-auth-7te7ux, head a8d7a818cae49a4a3a21d9e6693bed84b61e1e17, base main@d6b82f0. Draft only: not merged, not marked ready, no auto-merge, nothing released or installed.
Run swift test in brain-bar/, at least TextFormatterParityTests and BrainBarOperationReceiptTests.
Optionally run brainlayer health-check and the sprint_gate deferred round trip against a served BrainBar that has a compact default. Expect canary counts equal to the number of - ID: rows, and search_visible true for a fresh marker.
After that, the body can say Fixes #1069.
I recommend the Codex↔Claude pair plus CodeRabbit for review, per AGENTS.md.
Parse compact and full BrainBar search rows in probes and health checks
Adds search_response.search_result_rows and search_response.search_result_count in search_response.py. They parse compact, full, and numbered-helper listings, and return None for unrecognized text so callers can tell an unrecognized response from an empty one.
structured_results returns structuredContent.results when present, and the count helper prefers it over text parsing.
sprint_gate.search_result_rows in sprint_gate.py now uses the shared parser instead of local full-header extraction. health_check._canary_count in health_check.py uses the shared counter before its "Found N results" text fallback.
Extends the compact search legend in TextFormatter.swift to explain that a blank project column means the caller's project filter.
Behavioral Change: canary counts now come from parsed rows or structured results before the text fallback; the sprint gate no longer counts markers that appear only in a quoted listing header.
Search results and result counts are now recognized more consistently across compact, legacy, and structured response formats, including zero-result searches.
Health checks and sprint-gate reporting now better reflect the results returned by search.
Documentation
Search result summaries clarify that a blank project field represents your project filter.
The compact search legend clarifies the meaning of a blank project column. BrainLayer adds shared parsing for structured results and compact or legacy text listings. The sprint gate and health-check canary use the shared parsing helpers, with tests covering supported response formats.
New helpers read structured results, extract rows from recognized compact and legacy listings, and count results. Structured results take precedence when available.
Sprint gate and canary integrations scripts/sprint_gate.py, src/brainlayer/health_check.py, tests/test_search_response.py, tests/test_ci_ratchet_table.py
The sprint gate delegates row extraction to the shared parser. The health-check canary uses shared result counts and receives the response object. Tests cover parsing, marker detection, canary counts and statuses, and compact-response measurement.
A numbered heading in a search result can cause the sprint gate to miss a later matching result. The issue is limited to this response format and content pattern.

Explanation
Issue #1069 has only coding requirements. Three objectives apply. Diffs read: base to head, for TextFormatter.swift, health_check.py, and sprint_gate.py. Also read: src/brainlayer/search_response.py at head.
[#1069] Legend must say a blank project column means the caller's project filter. Met. compactSearchLegend (TextFormatter.swift:4) now ends with "blank project=your project filter". Row format is unchanged. Swift build and XCTest were not run, so this is verified by the diff only.
[#1069] sprint_gate.py and health_check.py must parse the '- ID:' rows or use structuredContent, not the old 'N of M shown' header. Met in code. sprint_gate.search_result_rows now delegates to search_response.search_result_rows. health_check._canary_count calls search_result_count, which returns structuredContent.results length when present. Otherwise it counts '- ID: ' rows after the first listing header. The 'Found N results' and non-empty fallbacks are kept. The old '### N.' form is still parsed.
[#1069] IDs are not escaped, and the issue allows that when no current ID contains '|'. Met. The module docstring records that IDs must not contain '|' or a newline.
Limits: test file contents were not read, so the PR's test claims are not checked here. The compact header 'N/M' is treated as shown/total. That is not checked against the Swift source. Review metadata lists head 3fedd40 and merge base 6bc5d40. Those differ from the named head and base, which the PR text also gives as a8d7a81 and d6b82f0. This assessment uses the named head and base. Runtime behavior against a served BrainBar was not checked.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Every changed area maps to #1069 or to its tests.
TextFormatter.swift: one-line legend change. In scope (objective 1).
Swift test literal updates (BrainBarOperationReceiptTests, TextFormatterParityTests): per the PR summary, each changes one line to match the new legend. These support objective 1. Their contents were not read.
src/brainlayer/search_response.py: new shared parser named in objective 2. In scope.
scripts/sprint_gate.py and src/brainlayer/health_check.py: the two call sites named in objective 2. In scope. The canary liveness semantics and the num_results: 1 call are unchanged in the diff.
tests/test_search_response.py and tests/test_ci_ratchet_table.py: tests for the same parser and call sites. ci_ratchet_table.collect_search_latency calls sprint_gate.search_result_rows, so its regression test follows from the same change.
No change was found that is unrelated to #1069. Not checked: the contents of the test files and the Swift test files.

Which commit this whole table is about. On a pull_request event the checkout is GitHub's synthetic merge ref, whose sha is not on the PR — #759's table printed 13fa724278bf while that PR's head was 4632f979 — so this row names the PR-head parent instead, the sha a reviewer can actually see. The comparison sha is read live from repos/{owner}/{repo}/pulls/{n} when the table is collected, not taken from the event payload, because the payload cannot know the run has been overtaken. Residual window, stated rather than papered over: a push landing between that read and the comment being posted is not caught here — the run for that push refreshes the table.

What every comparison is measured AGAINST, and who says so. The baseline fields of tests/fixtures/sprint_gate/corpus.json (queries, latency_baseline_ms, thresholds) are compared to the ratchet-attestation artifact of the latest successful push or (no-input) workflow_dispatch run of ratchet-attest.yml on main, fetched through the Actions API — a PR run cannot write to another run's artifacts. A field that differs is RED unless that main run measured the new value. The calibrated socket collector can license p50/p95; every absent measured path stays locked, so missing collection never passes as permission for a hand edit. Boundary: the comparator is this PR's checkout of ci_ratchet_table.py, diff-reviewable, not tamper-proof.

Distinguish helper result headings from headings in result content.
If a full-detail result contains a Markdown line such as ### 2. Notes, NUMBERED_ROW treats that content as another result. The helper emits full-detail content with its newlines intact. With two actual hits, [:shown] can then discard the second hit and return the content heading instead. Match result headings using the helper’s adjacent result fields, and add a fixture with a numbered heading in content. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Stacked on #1638 (Refs #1069). Hosted macOS CI at a8d7a81 failed
MCPDietTests.testFixtureWireMeasurements: "1 compact IDs" totalled 27660
bytes against the 27440 gate, because the legend gained 35 bytes on every

- The legend note applies only to a blanked project column, so it now
appears only when a row was actually blanked by the caller's project

Unscoped answers return to the pre-#1069 legend, byte for byte. Row

BrainBarOperationReceipt.searchCount accepts both legends.
- MCPFraming encodes with .withoutEscapingSlashes. Foundation writes "/"
as "\/"; both decode to the same JSON string, so it was pure overhead on
paths and the "N/M" header.
Predicted from the synthetic fixture: item 1 -270 (27390), item 2 -460,
item 3 -100. Budgets unchanged.

Change and evidence
Base and head. Requested base was
origin/maind6b82f04f6baa00081c9dc38afca2ada9d114c78. I fetched it inside the cloud session before editing and got the same SHA,d6b82f0. The cloud checkout started on an older detached commit,eaefe65. I reset the topic branch onto the fetched main. Head isa8d7a818cae49a4a3a21d9e6693bed84b61e1e17onclaude/opus-5-5-worker-auth-7te7ux, one commit on top ofd6b82f0.State at start. #1069 was open with no assignee and no comments. I found no open PR that references it. I did not touch the owned drafts #1631, #1632, #1633, #1634 or #1636.
Scope. This PR changes formatter/consumer compatibility only. It is not a UI redesign and leaves the served tool contract unchanged.
What changed and why
brain-bar/Sources/BrainBar/Formatting/TextFormatter.swift:4). The legend changes fromID|score|project|date|source; S=summary P=previewto…; blank project=your project filter. The row format and IDs are unchanged.BrainBarOperationReceipt.searchCountmatches against the legend constant, so it follows the change automatically.src/brainlayer/search_response.py, which reads the shapes BrainBar actually serves:## "<q>" N/Mheader, then the legend, then- ID: id|score|project|date|sourcerows followed byS:/P:lines.## Search results for … - N of M shownheader, then- ID: … | score: …rows followed by indented lines.### N.headings.- ID:. Both formatters flatten newlines out of previews and summaries, so a quoted header or- ID:inside retrieved text can never start a line.structuredContent.results, its length is the count.|or a newline. IDs are still not escaped. No current ID format contains either character.scripts/sprint_gate.search_result_rowsnow calls the new parser. That one function feeds two consumers:search_visiblein the deferred round-trip check.scripts/ci_ratchet_table.collect_search_latency. Against a compact hybrid answer it raised "brain_search returned no results for a configured query", because the hybrid path always renders compact text.health_check._canary_count(text, result)now uses the structuredContent or counted-row result.- N of M shownregex that matched anywhere in the text.Found N results, otherwise1 if text.strip() else 0.num_results: 1.Fail-first on the production call sites (old vs new)
I copied the changed
scripts/sprint_gate.pyandsrc/brainlayer/health_check.pyaside, restored both fromorigin/main, and kept the new tests and module. Command:(
tests/test_search_response_1069.pywas renamed totests/test_search_response.pybefore commit.)Old code: 5 failed, 16 passed.

Mutant control. I changed the parser from
line.startswith(ID_ROW)toID_ROW in line, which would count- ID:anywhere in a line. Result: 3 failed, 16 passed. The failures were the count-shape, structured-vs-text and canary cases, all caused by the fake- ID:quoted inside a preview.Fixtures mirror

### N.rows, the canary now counts 0 rows and reportsempty. The old code read N from the header and reportedresults. Both states are healthy; no issue is raised either way.### N.rows. Splitting is the same as before, now capped at the header's N. If retrieved full content contains a line starting with### <digit>., the rows can still split wrongly. This affects onlydetail: fullon the hybrid path, and that behavior predates this PR.Owner handoff → @Orc (BrainLayer lead snoozed)

Note
Parse compact and full BrainBar search rows in probes and health checks
search_response.search_result_rowsandsearch_response.search_result_countin search_response.py. They parse compact, full, and numbered-helper listings, and return None for unrecognized text so callers can tell an unrecognized response from an empty one.structured_resultsreturnsstructuredContent.resultswhen present, and the count helper prefers it over text parsing.sprint_gate.search_result_rowsin sprint_gate.py now uses the shared parser instead of local full-header extraction.health_check._canary_countin health_check.py uses the shared counter before its "Found N results" text fallback.Macroscope summarized a8d7a81.
