Summary

Teams outbound features from chat@4.35–4.41:

  • Reactions (add_reaction / remove_reaction) now call the Teams conversations reactions API. Before this change they only logged a warning. Upstream's alias map applies (check, eyes, pin, rocket, thinking, thumbs_up, x), and any other name is sent as a native Teams reaction ID. Errors go through _handle_teams_error.
  • Targeted ephemeral messages: TeamsAdapter.post_ephemeral is new.
    • In channels and group chats it sends a targeted activity: with_recipient(Account(id, name=id, role="user"), True) through _send_to, which the SDK sends to ?isTargetedActivity=true.
    • In 1:1 chats it posts normally and returns used_fallback=True.
    • The sent id is recorded under teams:targetedActivity:{conv}:{id} (value "1", 24 h TTL), so edit_message / delete_message use update_targeted / delete_targeted. A successful delete clears the record. Every state access is best effort.
  • Placeholder-aware streaming: this only applies when fallback_streaming_placeholder_text is an explicit str ("" counts).
    • With an active DM streamer, the placeholder is sent first with stream.update() as the native status line.
    • With no streamer, stream() returns None before reading the stream, so core posts the placeholder and then edits it.
    • When the placeholder is UNSET or None, behaviour is the same as before. stream() now returns RawMessage | None.
  • First-chunk wait bound: fixes the hang reported in the issue comment (found while reviewing fix(teams): support microsoft-teams-apps 2.1, lift cap to <2.2 (#250) #262). _stream_via_emit now waits at most 30 s for the first chunk id.

Verify-first results

I checked the SDK names on 2.0.13.4, 2.0.16 and 2.1.0 (the uv.lock resolves 2.1.0).

  • Reactions: 2.0.16+ has conversations.add_reaction / delete_reaction, which is upstream's conversations.addReaction. 2.0.13.4 has only ApiClient.reactions.add / delete, which 2.0.16+ deprecates. The adapter checks which one exists. Both send PUT / DELETE …/activities/{id}/reactions/{type}.
  • Targeted mutation: activities(conv).update_targeted / delete_targeted exist on all three versions.
  • Targeted send: with_recipient(value, is_targeted) exists on all three. 2.0.x ActivitySender.send sends targeted activities to create_targeted, and 2.1's send_or_update_activity sends them to create_targeted_activity.
  • role field: 2.1's Account has a role field. On 2.0.x, extra="allow" keeps role as an extra field, so it reaches the wire on both. A test checks the wire payload.
  • Personal-chat guard: on 2.0.x the SDK raises ValueError for a targeted send to a personal chat, and 2.1 does not check. is_dm runs first, so it is never reached.

Tests ported

From packages/adapter-teams/src/index.test.ts (adapter tests are not fidelity-mapped):

  • reactions: "should add a raw Teams reaction ID"; the it.each "should map %s to the Teams reaction ID %s" (7 cases); "should remove a reaction with the Teams conversation API"; "should translate Teams API failures".
  • postEphemeral: "should send a targeted text message to the requested user"; "should send targeted adaptive cards"; "should handle targeted send failure by calling handleTeamsError"; "falls back to a normal post in a 1:1 chat instead of a targeted send".
  • targeted message mutation: all 5 tests.
  • streaming (in tests/test_teams_native_streaming.py): "uses core fallback for an explicit group-chat placeholder"; the it.each "preserves buffered group-chat streaming for placeholder %s" (no options / UNSET / None); "sends an explicit placeholder as native status before the first chunk".

Python-specific tests:

  • An invalid reaction name raises before any HTTP call (7 inputs).
  • Reactions use the 2.0.13 reactions client when conversations.add_reaction is missing.
  • Real-SDK wire tests:
    • reaction PUT / DELETE go to the thread's service URL;
    • targeted create, edit and delete all carry isTargetedActivity=true, and the recipient JSON includes role and isTargeted.
  • State failure modes: a write error does not fail the send, a delete error does not fail the delete, and a failed delete keeps the record.
  • "" placeholder; UNSET / None with an active streamer send no status; a canceled streamer still buffers.
  • An end-to-end ThreadImpl group-chat placeholder posts and then edits.
  • The first-chunk bound, tested with a fake streamer and with a real SDK HttpStream that gets a terminal 403.

The obsolete warn-only reaction tests were removed (tests/test_teams_adapter.py::TestReactions, tests/test_critical_fixes.py::TestTeamsReactionsGraceful).

Fidelity

Delta vs committed report (HEAD): missing 104 -> 104 (+0). The adapter tests are not in the fidelity mapping, so scripts/fidelity_target.json is unchanged.

Divergences (2, within budget)

Both have rows in the non-parity table in docs/UPSTREAM_SYNC.md:

  1. Reaction-ID check: a resolved ID that is not [A-Za-z0-9_-]+ raises ValidationError. The Python SDK puts the type into the URL path without escaping it.
  2. First-chunk wait bound (STREAM_FIRST_CHUNK_ID_TIMEOUT_S = 30): on microsoft-teams-apps 2.0.16+, a terminal 403 on the first flush neither emits chunk nor sets canceled, so the unbounded await hung the DM handler. When the bound expires, the stream is settled with stream.close(). A late-delivered stream keeps its first chunk's id. A user cancel posts nothing. A flush that is still in flight posts nothing, so the reply is never sent twice. Only a confirmed non-delivery posts the accumulated text as one buffered message, so the reply is not lost.

Consumer impact (Teams)

  1. add_reaction / remove_reaction now call Teams and can raise (AuthenticationError, AdapterPermissionError, NetworkError, AdapterRateLimitError, or ValidationError for a non-path-safe ID).
  2. post_ephemeral in channels and group chats sends a native targeted message instead of falling back to a DM. This requires the app to be installed in the conversation. edit_message and delete_message now read the state adapter once per call.
  3. Apps that set fallback_streaming_placeholder_text explicitly (for example chinchill) now see the placeholder as a DM status line, and group chats switch from one buffered post to post+edit. Unset behaves as before.

Testing

  • Full validation passes on the final HEAD (after merging main): ruff check and format, audit_test_quality, --check-docs, strict fidelity, pytest 7837 passed / 24 skipped, pyrefly 0 errors.
  • The Teams native-streaming and fixture-replay tests pass (tests/test_teams_native_streaming.py, tests/test_fixture_replay.py).
  • tests/test_teams_adapter.py and tests/test_teams_native_streaming.py also pass on microsoft-teams-apps 2.0.16 and 2.0.13.4. The real-SDK first-chunk tests inject the mock transport into the 2.0.x ActivitySender too. The terminal-403 test skips on 2.0.13.4, which treats every streaming 403 as a cancel.
  • 22 targeted mutations of the new code are all killed by the tests.
  • A live Teams check is pending: a DM stream with and without a placeholder, plus reactions and an ephemeral message in a channel.

Merge gate

Review findings (two independent reviewers):

gpt-6-astra: 9 rounds. The cap of 5 was exceeded because main moved twice, and each merge needed a fresh verdict on the new HEAD. The final verdict on bd203ca is clean ("No actionable regressions found"). Every finding except one was a real defect in the new Python-only timeout recovery, fixed with a failing-first test:

  1. The fallback could duplicate a slow first flush or post after a cancel, and the real-SDK test bypassed the 2.0.x sender. Fixed: settle with close(), re-check canceled, and inject the transport into the 2.0.x sender.
  2. An SDK StreamCancelledError (a subclass of asyncio.CancelledError) raised while settling escaped the handler. Fixed: only that subclass is caught.
  3. The late first chunk's id was lost: the final response carries DO_NOT_USE_PLACEHOLDER_ID. Fixed: the capture future is shielded from the timeout.
  4. A flush that outlasts close()'s own wait could be delivered after the fallback post. Fixed: no post while a flush is running or scheduled.
  5. The Teams DM ephemeral fallback ignores user_id. Rebutted as upstream parity: chat@4.41.1 packages/adapter-teams/src/index.ts:1347-1360 does the same, and the thread ID does not record who the DM partner is. A parity comment was added, and the finding was not raised again.
  6. Clean (after the main merge).
  7. A chunk left queued by a failed flush blocked the fallback, and on 2.0.13.4 an early-closed streamer was reused. Fixed: in-flight now means a running or scheduled flush, and a stream finalized early is retired.
  8. A failed streamer reused after the fallback post resent the posted text. Fixed: it is retired before the post.
  9. Clean on the final HEAD.

Bots: CodeRabbit left one trivial nitpick: parametrize the "" placeholder test into the "Working..." one. Declined: "" is a separate boundary input that guards the isinstance(placeholder, str) check against a truthiness regression. Gemini posted nothing.

CI: Lint & Type Check, test (3.12), test (3.13), CodeQL and Analyze are all green on bd203ca, and the PR is mergeable. Full local validation also passes on bd203ca: pytest 7837 passed / 24 skipped, strict fidelity, --check-docs, audit, ruff and pyrefly 0 errors. The Teams suites also pass on microsoft-teams-apps 2.0.16 and 2.0.13.4.

Closes #219
Part of #184

…lder-aware native streaming (#219)

Ports vercel/chat 5eb8b846 (#734), 160140e3 (#737), 93a58af5 (#709) from
chat@4.35.0 and 85089037 (#951, chat@4.41.0):

- add_reaction/remove_reaction call the conversations reactions API with
upstream's alias map; non-path-safe IDs raise ValidationError (Python-only).
- post_ephemeral sends a targeted message in channels/group chats and falls
back to a normal post in 1:1 chats; targeted ids are recorded in state
(24h TTL) so edit/delete use the targeted endpoints.
- stream() shows an explicit fallback_streaming_placeholder_text as the
  native DM status and returns None without a streamer so core posts+edits;
  UNSET/None keep the previous paths.
- Bound the first native-stream chunk-id wait (SDK 2.0.16+ terminal 403 hang).

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The Teams adapter adds reaction API calls and targeted ephemeral messages, including targeted edits and deletes. Streaming now handles explicit placeholders and bounds the wait for the first chunk ID, with buffered posting in eligible timeout cases.

Changes

Teams outbound behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reaction API support
src/chat_sdk/adapters/teams/adapter.py, tests/test_teams_adapter.py, tests/test_critical_fixes.py
Reaction operations now call Teams APIs. The adapter maps known aliases, validates other reaction IDs, and supports SDK-specific API routing. Tests replace the prior unsupported-operation expectations with API, validation, and error coverage.
Targeted ephemeral messages and mutations
src/chat_sdk/adapters/teams/adapter.py, tests/test_teams_adapter.py, docs/UPSTREAM_SYNC.md
The adapter sends targeted messages outside personal chats and records message IDs for 24 hours. It selects targeted edit and delete endpoints for recorded messages. Personal chats use ordinary posting, and state-operation failures follow the tested fallback behavior.
Placeholder-aware streaming and timeout fallback
src/chat_sdk/adapters/teams/adapter.py, tests/test_teams_native_streaming.py, docs/UPSTREAM_SYNC.md, CHANGELOG.md
Active native streams receive configured string placeholders before text chunks. Applicable inactive-stream paths return None for core post-and-edit handling. The first-chunk ID wait is limited to 30 seconds; tests cover settling, cancellation, in-flight sends, and buffered fallback.

Explanation

The PR implements the three coding objectives in #219. It adds Teams reaction API calls and aliases, targeted ephemeral sends with state-backed targeted edits and deletes, placeholder-aware streaming, tests, documentation, and a changelog entry. The reported automated validation also passes. However, #219 requires pass-through reaction IDs to match ^[A-Za-z0-9_]+$; the PR summary reports [A-Za-z0-9_-]+, which accepts hyphens and does not meet the stated validation requirement. The pending live Teams loop is manual testing and is not a coding requirement.

A rabbit taps a Teams reaction with care,
Then sends a marked message to someone there.
A placeholder appears before words take flight,
The first-chunk clock keeps the stream in sight.
If no chunk arrives, buffered text may hop,
And targeted edits find the right stop.

Merge the duplicate empty-string placeholder test.

test_an_empty_string_placeholder_also_uses_core_fallback repeats the body of test_uses_core_fallback_for_an_explicit_group_chat_placeholder. The only difference is the placeholder value. Parametrize one test over "Working..." and "". This keeps the "" case covered and removes the duplicate test. The repository guideline says: "No two tests should verify the same thing."

Merge gate: CI green (Lint & Type Check, test (3.12), test (3.13), CodeQL, Analyze (python), Analyze (actions)); local Codex review (gpt-6-astra, xhigh, --base origin/main) on bd203ca: "No actionable regressions found against the supplied merge base.
