What
Steam Cloud is free. The cloud-save API (write save.json) suits Electron better than Auto-Cloud, whose folder sync doesn't fit Electron's storage and is unconfirmed under Proton.
Decision / recommendation
Cloud-save API for the save file only (quota ~1 MB / 10 files), never display settings.

Can start now (28 Oct): build and test this against Spacewar (app 480), Valve's test app, while the Steamworks account is verified. The app id comes from the build settings; a release build that still says 480 fails.
