Steam: one build switch for web and Steam #160

Open

Description

@ChefControl

Part of #142 · Milestone 3: Playable desktop build (Windows) · plan item 3.2

Size: S · Owner-only step: no

What

One build-time switch (like the stage 3 flag). The Steam build leaves out everything web-only: Firebase entirely (Google sign-in, cloud saves, the Firestore scoreboard, report uploads), Ko-fi, YouTube, link-preview tags, the reload-after-deploy script and the ? test flags.

Decision / recommendation

Owner's decision (Q5, 2026-10-27): split. The Steam version stands alone on Steam's free features, with no Firebase, no Google sign-in and no server; the web game keeps running as today with Firebase. They share code only: separate scoreboards, saves move over with the web-save import. One codebase, two builds from the same commit; the Steam build doesn't bundle Firebase at all.

Done when

  • npm run build and a Steam build from the same commit

    From #146 (PR #203): Ko-fi is now a build-time toggle in src/flags.ts, off unless VITE_KOFI=on. Only the live web deploy (deploy.yml) sets it on.

    When you build this switch: the Steam build must not set VITE_KOFI=on. Leaving it unset is enough: the Settings row and its ko-fi.com link are left out of index.html (vite.config.ts), and there's no 10-minute nudge. To check a Steam build, grep its output for ko-fi.com; it should find nothing.
