Steam: open-source licences list and GPL/LGPL check #149

Open

Description

@ChefControl

Part of #142 · Milestone 1: Clean to sell · plan item 1.6

Size: S · Owner-only step: no

What

three.js and html2canvas (MIT) and the Firebase SDK (Apache 2.0) ask for their notices to ship with the game; Electron adds Chromium's. Steam needs Valve's agreement before shipping GPL/LGPL-licensed code; the known case is Electron's bundled ffmpeg (LGPL), which many Electron games on Steam ship.

Decision / recommendation

Generate an "Open-source licences" list under Credits & Copyrights at build time, and flag any GPL/LGPL; ask Valve about ffmpeg if in doubt.

Done when

  • Licences list in the game
  • A build-time check that fails on a new GPL/LGPL dependency

    Web build part in PR #209: the licences list under Credits & Copyrights, licences.txt, and a build check that fails on GPL/LGPL/AGPL or unknown licences (allowlist: APPROVED in tools/licences.ts).

    Still open here, once the Electron wrapper (#159) exists: Electron's and Chromium's notices and ffmpeg (LGPL) handed to the generator as extra notices, Valve's agreement for ffmpeg, then an APPROVED entry. What the wrapper must do is listed in a comment on #159.
