Java Version and Source Level #142

Description

@Anticodes

Hey! First of all i've been actively using APDE for a good over 10 years. I've created so many projects on the go thank to this, so i will thank you upfront for your efforts. Welcome back!

The main thing i encounter is the java version and source level errors i guess it uses Java 7 and source level 1.6 to compile our sketches which limits us too much compared to a more modern java version.

I am mainly a Ts/Rust developer so some of these features below are becoming essential in this era, correct me if i'm wrong :)

Main things that would be awesome are:

  • High order functions
  • Strings on switch cases
  • Lambda functions (Currently only via anonymous callback classes)
  • Factory methods (creating hashmaps and arraylists with initial values)
  • "var" type inference (typing long type names in mobile is a pain!)
  • And probably much more that i don't even know

So is there an easy way to up the java version? or needs to go under an overhaul (which i might help with what i can)?
