Fixes a 2.x writer bug that downstream consumers have to work around (see bielu/Bielu.AspNetCore.ApiDescriptions#137).

AsyncAPI 2.x lists a channel's servers by name. The 2.x reader stores them as #/servers/{name}, and the 2.x writer emitted the raw fragment (/servers/production). As a result, any 2.x document with channel servers failed a read/write round trip. The writer now outputs the server name.

Testing

  • Added 2 regression tests (a 2.x document read and written back, and a hand-built reference). Both fail without the fix.
  • dotnet test: all pass.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • AsyncAPI 2.x channel server references now serialize local server pointers as server names, including names with escaped JSON Pointer characters. External references and other non-server references remain unchanged. AsyncAPI 3.x server references continue to serialize in their reference format, and server references can be read and reserialized across supported versions.

Walkthrough

AsyncAPI 2.x channel serialization now converts local server references to decoded server names. It preserves external and non-server references. Tests cover AsyncAPI 2.x serialization and round trips, plus AsyncAPI 3.x server reference serialization.

Explanation

The title names the fix and the affected area: AsyncAPI 2.x channel servers are now written as server names. It matches the main change in AsyncAPiChannel.cs, where local #/servers/{name} references are emitted as names. The title is specific and follows the conventional-commit style.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the bug, the cause, the fix, and the tests. It includes the 2.x reader/writer mismatch, the round-trip failure, and two regression tests with a passing dotnet test run. It does not fill in the template's Changelog section or the Related Issues section. It links a downstream issue in bielu/Bielu.AspNetCore.ApiDescriptions, not a closing reference in this repository. The description is mostly complete, so the check passes.

ByteBardOrg/AsyncAPI.NET#57 makes the 2.x writer emit channel servers as
names, and #58 stops it crashing on a message trait without headers, so
the version-specific "#key" server reference and the injected empty trait
headers go. Both need #56 too: a full "#/servers/{name}" pointer goes
through the reader's JsonPointer path, which throws MissingMethodException
against JsonPointer.Net 7.

New AsyncApiV2WriterTests cover both. They and five existing 2.x tests
fail on 4.0.0-beta.20 and pass against ByteBard built with #56-#58 merged,
so this waits for the ByteBard release that contains them.

Lets ensure we have similar tests for v3, so we can prove no regressions across the versions.

@VisualBean Added the 3.x tests, so this now covers both versions:

  • 3.x round trip: a document with servers: [$ref: '#/servers/production'] reads, resolves and writes back unchanged.
  • 3.x writer: a hand-built #/servers/production reference is written as a $ref.
  • 2.x → 3.x upgrade: a 2.x channel's servers: [production] comes out as $ref: '#/servers/production'.
  • 3.x escaped reference: $ref: '#/servers/a~1b' resolves to server a/b and writes back unchanged.

CodeRabbit's review also led to two fixes on the 2.x side:

  • External or non-#/servers/ references are no longer shortened to a bare name, since that would silently point the channel at a local server. They're written unchanged.
  • Server names are now JSON-Pointer escaped when the 2.x reader builds the reference, and the workspace registers document servers under the escaped pointer. Literal names like a~1b or a/b therefore round-trip correctly. Such names fail the spec's key pattern anyway, so this only matters with validation off.

AsyncAPI 2.x lists a channel's servers by name, but the 2.x writer emitted
the reference fragment, so "#/servers/production" was written as
"/servers/production". This also broke a 2.x read/write round trip.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Only a local "#/servers/{name}" reference is reduced to a server name. An
external reference, or any other pointer, is written as is, since reducing it
to its last token would silently point the channel at a local server of the
same name. The name is decoded as one token, so both the 2.x reader's
unescaped form and an escaped 3.x pointer give the same name.

Also adds 3.x channel server tests, so the change is shown not to regress
3.x serialization or the 2.x to 3.x upgrade.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The 2.x reader built "#/servers/{name}" without escaping the name, while the
writer decodes the pointer token. A literal name such as "a~1b" therefore
came back as "a/b" after a read/write round trip. The reader now escapes the
name, and the workspace registers document servers under the escaped pointer
so the reference still resolves. Server names this needs are outside the
spec's key pattern, so this only matters when validation is off.

Removes the lenient JsonPointer.UnescapeToken. The 2.x writer now parses
the reference fragment with JsonPointer, so a name is only written for an
exact /servers/{name} pointer. Nested or malformed pointers (for example
a '~' not followed by '0' or '1') are written unchanged, like other
non-server references.

@VisualBean Agreed, and I'd say it's fully obsolete rather than partially. #60 covers every source change here: escaping 2.x server names when building references, registering servers under escaped pointers, EscapeToken, and writing a bare name only for an exact /servers/{name} pointer with strict parsing. I ran this PR's AsyncApiChannel_Should tests (the 2.x and 3.x round trips, upgrades, escaped names and malformed pointers) against #60's code and they all pass, so I'm closing this in favour of #60. Happy to move those tests over to #60 if you want the extra 3.x coverage.

One edge case I noticed while checking, which also applies to #60: names are percent-decoded when they're read back from a pointer (TryFromUriFragment), but they're never percent-encoded when pointers are built or registered. So a 2.x server named a%20b is written back as a b, and a 3.x $ref: '#/servers/a%20b' to server a b misses the workspace and resolves to a separate copy. Both names already fail the spec's key pattern, so this only matters with validation off.
