Enforce upgrade-safety gates and migration validation in the contract lifecycle #554

Closed

Description

@grantfox-oss

Harden contract upgrades against unsafe migration windows, invariant drift, and re-entry or repeated-init misuse in the upgrade path.

  • Affected files: app/contract/contracts/Folder/src/upgrade_test.rs, app/contract/contracts/Folder/src/guard_test.rs, app/contract/contracts/Folder/src/lib.rs, app/contract/contracts/Folder/src/storage.rs, app/contract/contracts/Folder/src/admin.rs, app/contract/contracts/Folder/src/metadata.rs, app/contract/UPGRADE_SAFETY_GATE_IMPLEMENTATION.md, app/contract/UPGRADE_SAFETY_GATE_TEST_GUIDE.md
  • Acceptance criteria:
    • Upgrade operations are blocked when gate checks fail, invariants are violated, or a migration window is unsafe.
    • Repeated or malicious initializer paths are prevented without breaking legitimate upgrade flows.
    • Team documentation and test coverage describe safe deployment and rollback expectations

    @ABEEGOLD

    Hello Maintainer,

    I've reviewed the issue and have experience with Rust, Soroban smart contracts, upgradeable contract patterns, migration safety, authorization controls, and test-driven development. I can implement upgrade-safety gates that prevent unsafe contract upgrades, protect against invariant drift during migrations, and harden the upgrade lifecycle against repeated initialization and malicious upgrade paths.

    My approach will be to review the current upgrade flow, identify upgrade and migration invariants, and introduce validation checks that block upgrades whenever safety conditions are not met. I'll ensure initializer logic cannot be re-executed after deployment while preserving legitimate upgrade and migration workflows. Any authorization and state-transition checks required for secure upgrades will be implemented with careful attention to backward compatibility and rollback safety.

    In addition, I'll expand the existing test suite with coverage for failed gate checks, unsafe migration windows, invariant violations, repeated initialization attempts, successful upgrade paths, and rollback scenarios. I'll also update the accompanying documentation to clearly describe deployment procedures, upgrade requirements, migration expectations, and recovery strategies so contributors can safely manage future contract releases.

    The final implementation will include code changes, comprehensive test coverage, and documentation updates that satisfy the acceptance criteria while improving the overall security and maintainability of the contract upgrade process.
