The signed 0.2.8 walkthrough reproduced a valid exFAT backup being refused by Check: macOS had created
._<manifest>.mhlfor extended attributes, and discovery tried to parse it as XML.Discovery now uses the existing bounded AppleDouble validator before excluding a companion from the MHL document list. It requires a recognized metadata-only container and a real companion. It leaves every file untouched and does not alter transfer selection. Arbitrary
._files, damaged lookalikes, orphans and data-fork containers remain subject to normal evidence validation.Observed red-to-green coverage includes a mounted-exFAT test that uses
setxattrto make macOS generate the companion, plus five synthetic controls including legitimate XML with a._filename. Focused validation passed 14 XCTest cases and all 22 saved-evidence/compatibility test functions. Final full gates passed: 1099 Mac tests, 13 intentional skips, zero failures; 124 engine XCTest cases (15 skips, zero failures) and a passing 151-test Swift Testing run (six opt-in skips). The first release candidate was never published.
