Summary

Adds claude-notes/plans/2026-09-06-fma-bake-v4-plan.md — a proposal-stage plan for the next FMA bake, scoped deliberately to the address layer (§5 excludes geometry, palettes, LOD, the renderer, and the shipped 20260629c connective-layer fix).

Docs only. No code, no bake, nothing scheduled.

Why

Three producers mint identity three different ways for the same concept, and two of them depend on iteration order:

producer identity content-stable?
fma/src/bin/guid.rs:119 golden_id(k) + +1 collision probe no — k is the enumeration index
fma/src/bin/anchor.rs:111 fnv16(path.join("/")) yes; no collision probe
crates/osint-bake/src/bin/body.rs:129 row (JSON index), u32→u16 unchecked no — JSON order

A key minted by one does not resolve in another's output. It has not bitten yet only because each consumer reads exactly one bake. Alongside that: the upstream part_of relation is a DAG (536 of 1,523 nodes multi-parent in the 3.0 table) while the cascade consumes a tree, and composite_parts.txt — 8,265 of 12,530 edges carrying a laterality axis — is not read at all.

None of this is visible from a correct render or a green build, because every defect is in the key rather than the mesh.

What the plan contains

  • 9 findings, each with the file:line or command that produced it; 1 marked BLOCKING, the rest OPEN/CONTEXT.
  • 7 caveats bounding the evidence — including that the shallow clone makes git dates useless (recency came from release asset timestamps instead), and that the 3.0 and 4.0 node counts are different datasets and explicitly not a before/after.
  • 5 weighted decisions (identity mint, multi-parent/views, laterality, depth overflow, source version) with cost/risk per option and one option marked reject rather than merely worse — encoding an axis into a key tier would poison prefix routing.
  • 6 probes that gate the work. Three are hard gates; the plan states that a v4 landing without them green is a rebake with the same defects and a new date in its filename.

Verification

Docs-only change; nothing to build or run. Every number in the plan is read from committed source, committed data, or release metadata — no producer was re-run in this session, and the plan says so.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added a proposal outlining the scope and findings for the FMA bake v4 effort.
    • Documented evidence caveats, design options, required measurements, and explicit exclusions.
    • Captured considerations around identity handling, relationship modeling, depth limits, source selection, and group membership.
    • Included an operator sketch covering potential encoding approaches and related out-of-scope topics.

The FMA bake mints identity three different ways and two of them depend on
iteration order, so a key minted by one producer does not resolve in another's
output; the part_of relation upstream is a DAG while the cascade consumes a
tree; and the composite/primitive table that carries laterality is not read at
all. None of this is visible from a correct render or a green build, because
every defect is in the key. This plan records the nine findings with the
file:line or command behind each, seven caveats bounding what the evidence can
support, five weighted decisions, and six probes that gate any of them landing.

This documentation-only change has no immediate runtime impact, but key address-layer recommendations and capacity figures remain internally inconsistent. Correcting them before merge will prevent the plan from guiding incompatible or incomplete future implementations.

The sketch names nine directions and most of them are already carved in the
lance-graph V3 layout contract, so a research pass that starts from scratch
would re-derive the second-relationship GUID, the analytic Fisher-z read, the
Signed360 helix tenant, and three separate many-to-many mechanisms. Section 6
records where each already lives with its file:line, separates the three that
are genuinely new, and marks the whole section TO BE RESEARCHED so nothing in
it reads as a verdict. Also corrects an earlier claim in this session that the
24-slot i4 lane was unsanctioned: it exists as tenant 14 CausalWitness, read
G24N4, experimental by its own doc-comment.

The plan listed findings and weighted options in separate sections, so nothing
said which option closes which flaw or what it leaves standing — and two gaps
were invisible that way: the u32-to-u16 mint guard is closed by no option on
its own, and the three coexisting group-membership mechanisms have no owning
decision at all. Section 7 is the defect-to-remedy matrix with residuals and
the probe ordering; section 8 and a new reference doc under .claude/docs record
the BodyParts3D, VOXEL-MAN and volumetric-skeleton sources, what each
establishes, which finding it bears on, and the required data attribution.

- Around line 88-91: Revise the depth-cap analysis around tier_at and D-4 using
one consistent convention: count only tier/rail hierarchy levels, treating
classid as the root and identity as metadata rather than a tier. Recompute the
addressable-depth total, the 279-node/20% overflow statement, and D-4 capacity,
ensuring they agree with the classid plus 12 rails equals 13-level count.

…ple-list test

The newly-ungated `cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings`
rejects `&pandoc.blocks[0]` as a `useless_borrows_in_formatting` argument, so
`pampa` fails to compile its integration test and the run exits 101. The
failure is on the base branch, not in this branch's diff, which touches only
markdown; the same one-line change is already in the open clippy-gate PR and
this port no-ops once that lands.

Run test suite (ubuntu-latest) is red for a reason outside this PR — one line ported, the rest belongs to #147.

What failed, on 0ef275b, in the cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --profile ci -- -D warnings step:

error: redundant reference in `assert!` argument
  --> crates/pampa/tests/integration/test_treesitter_coverage.rs:469:9
469 | &pandoc.blocks[0]
    | ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ help: remove the redundant `&`
= note: `-D clippy::useless-borrows-in-formatting` implied by `-D warnings`
error: could not compile `pampa` (test "integration") due to 1 previous error
Process completed with exit code 101

Why it is not this PR's. The diff here is two markdown files — a plan under claude-notes/plans/ and a reference doc under .claude/docs/. It contains no Rust. The rejected expression is in a pampa integration test this branch never touches, and the lint became fatal when the workspace -D warnings gate was un-gated in #146 rather than through anything on this branch.

What I ported. #147 already carries the identical one-line change for this exact line, so it is in this branch now — dropping the & in the assert! format argument. Byte-identical to #147's patch, so it no-ops the moment that PR lands rather than conflicting with it. rustfmt --check clean on the file.

What I did not port, and why. #147's other ten files are dead_code allow/expect annotations across cockpit-server — a different finding class, several of them carrying reasoning about cfg(test)/feature/target asymmetries that belongs with its author. Duplicating that arc into a docs PR would widen this beyond what the failure named. If the gate peels back to those next, this PR stays red until #147 merges, and that is the right ordering.

Not verified locally. A full cargo clippy --workspace is not runnable in this sandbox — the lance + datafusion + deno tree exhausts the disk before linking. The change is a literal one-token deletion matching the compiler's own help: suggestion and an already-reviewed patch, so the risk it carries is that it fixes too little, which CI reports, not too much.

…lti-parent fix

Two sections counted address depth differently — one treated identity as a
level and reached seven, the other counted classid plus rails and reached
thirteen — so the 279-node overflow figure was measured against a reading the
plan contradicts elsewhere; the convention is now pinned once, the count is
withdrawn until P-1 reports a depth histogram, and D-2's heading and verdict no
longer let "fill the rails as designed" read as closing multi-parent when the
prose beneath it says the opposite. The G24N4 entry cited the tenant's 16-byte
lane width where the carving applies to the 12-byte payload; corrected against
causal_witness.rs, where 12 bytes is 24 nibbles with 16 named and slots 16..24
reserved-empty. Also corrects the new-direction count from three to four.

The ported fix worked; the gate peeled back to #147's remainder, exactly as flagged above.

On a5a8d4d, pampa is gone from the error list — that finding is closed. What replaced it is entirely cockpit-server: 28 errors in q2-cockpit plus 14 in its test target.

Every error I can see in the log matches #147's diff line-for-line:

error site #147 carries
fields \source` and `timestamp` are never read` scene_player.rs:41 #[allow(dead_code)] on both fields
very complex type used (type_complexity) osm_features.rs:2246 the Point / DecodedShape / DecodedTile aliases + rewritten signature
this assertion has a constant value osm_features.rs:2374 moves it to const _: () = assert!(…) and drops the runtime assert

So the ordering my earlier comment described is now the measured state, not a prediction: this PR is blocked on #147 merging, and nothing in this branch can or should close it. Porting the remaining ~10 files would mean copying an open PR wholesale — including per-annotation reasoning about cfg(test)/feature/target asymmetries that belongs with its author — into a plan document. That is the widening the fix-porting rule exists to avoid, not an instance of it.

No second re-run spent: this is a real failure, not a flake, and it reproduces deterministically.

Leaving this PR watched until #147 lands, at which point the base carries all of it and my one-line pampa port becomes a no-op.
