Purpose

Make needle versus distribution operational. Palette indices identify representatives; the Palette256:Palette256 LUT carries calibrated relation scores. Compare signed i8 scores directly for argmax/argmin within the same monotonic FamilyGamma, and abstain if error intervals overlap.

Reuse

Actual bgz_tensor::FisherZTable and FamilyGamma. No custom cosine kernel, no new LUT engine, and no Google Search XOR/indexing or AVX2 code.

New falsifiers

  1. Negative signed i8 codes are compared as signed scores, not as incorrectly sign-extended usize LUT indices.
  2. Ordered i8 codes preserve argmax/argmin under decoded tanh, for a fixed family gamma; separate families must not be compared without calibration.
  3. An interval margin must be strict. An overlapping candidate remains undecided, not a hallucinated winner.
  4. Tie-break is stable in the explicit candidate order. The diagonal/self-identity is not confused with a distribution lookup.

Follow-up

Measure argmax disagreement/top-k recall over representative real corpora and margins near quantization ties; reuse HDR for progressively narrowing candidates. No performance or scientific-significance claim from this test.

probe: fold #1719's production-surface test into this series
cf83694 
Moves crates/bgz-tensor/tests/palette_pair_argextrema_probe.rs here from #1719. Unlike the local helpers already in this
series, it exercises the real implementation, so the series keeps its
experiment contract and gains the concrete counter-probe. #1719 is
closed as superseded once this lands.

This test now lives in #1711 (commit cf83694), where it serves as the production-surface counter-probe for the canonical #1709–#1717 series. It passes locally (release). I'll close this PR as superseded once #1711 has landed.
