What

Exchange address rules and AD↔cloud sync, as vocabulary. There is no executor here; lance-graph #1392 computes the violations.

AD holds a remote mailbox's addresses as:

  • proxyAddresses: SMTP:{primary}, smtp:{secondary}, smtp:{alias}@{tenant}.mail.onmicrosoft.com;
  • targetAddress: SMTP:{alias}@{tenant}.mail.onmicrosoft.com.

Exchange Online shows the same set as PrimarySmtpAddress and EmailAddresses. The alias is mailNickname.

Contract

  • exchange::AddressTemplate: numbered placeholders {0}, {1}, …, in order and separated by non-empty literals; the multi-value sibling of ogar_dir_core::label::LabelPattern.

    • render(values) substitutes them.
    • matches(s) returns the non-empty values, which render back to exactly s by construction.
  • exchange::ROUTING is {0}@{1}.mail.onmicrosoft.com. routing_parts(addr) returns (alias, tenant), and only for an address with a single @ and a single-label tenant.

  • Violation gains three variants plus AddressRole (Upn, PrimarySmtp, SecondarySmtp, Mail, Routing):

    • AddressConflict { key, holders: [(node, role)] }. UPN, SMTP, mail and routing addresses share one key space. A UPN or SMTP address that is another object's SMTP, mail or routing address conflicts. So does a mail held by another object, for example an admin account with mail set as a password-reset target but no mailbox. Same-attribute collisions stay DuplicateSmtp / DuplicateUpn. One object holding an address under several attributes is not a conflict.
    • RoutingNotInProxies { node }: a remote mailbox must own its routing address as an SMTP proxy.
    • RoutingMismatch { node }: the routing address must be ROUTING for the node's own mailNickname.
  • ogar_az::SYNCED (SyncedAttribute, SyncTransform, cloud_of) maps AD attributes to their cloud names, among them:

    • physicalDeliveryOfficeName → officeLocation;
    • userAccountControl → accountEnabled (combined by effective_active);
    • mS-DS-ConsistencyGuid → onPremisesImmutableId (base64);
    • extensionAttribute → onPremisesExtensionAttributes (the bag, below);
    • plus the onPremises* evidence.

    The cloud object id is the record identity, not a mapped attribute.

  • onPremisesExtensionAttributes is a bag. Graph returns one object of fifteen extensionAttributeN keys; AD stores fifteen separate attributes.

    • Both land in one pooled slot of the new AttrKind::Bag. Member n is extensionAttribute(n+1), an empty member is absent, and a bag with no values sets no slot.
    • Member names are not stored, so the AD and Graph bags are byte-identical and the pair syncs Same.
    • Read a member with ValuePool::bag_member(r, n): 1-based, BAG_LEN = 15.
    • ogar-ad refuses a multi-valued member, and no longer reports members 1–15 as ignored.
  • Schemas:

    • ogar-ad v4 adds physicalDeliveryOfficeName, and v5 adds the extensionAttribute bag.
    • ogar-az v2 requests onPremisesExtensionAttributes.
  • Already ingested. onPremisesSamAccountName and onPremisesDistinguishedName already come in. The DN's OU path (leaf CN and DC dropped, root first) goes into the shared OU dictionary, so a synced user's ou_hhtl equals its AD object's (shared_onprem_dictionary_aligns_ad_and_az_hhtl).

Merge order

This PR does not break lance-graph:

  • lance-graph only constructs Violation values and never matches on them exhaustively.
  • It never matches on AttrKind.
  • Its one schema-version check is >=.
  • No struct it builds gained a field.

lance-graph #1392's lance-graph-dir-sim suite passes against this head. #1392 needs this PR merged first.

Tests

The workspace passes 1006 tests; fmt and clippy -D warnings are clean.

  • the_routing_template_renders_and_matches_alias_and_tenant, a_template_needs_numbered_placeholders_in_order_with_separators.
  • ogar-az every_synced_attribute_exists_on_both_sides_once: every pair names a real attribute in both schemas, each side is mapped once, and the routing address is not synced.
  • ogar-ad the_office_is_kept_raw.
  • ogar-az the_extension_attribute_bag_matches_ad: positional members, null as absent, byte-identical to the AD bag, no slot when all null, v2 requests it and v1 does not.
  • ogar-ad extension_attributes_are_one_bag: members 15 and 3, members 16 and 0 not in the bag, a multi-valued member refused, no slot when none set.
  • select_is_derived_from_the_schema now checks every schema version against the attributes that existed by then. It used to hardcode "all attributes at v1", and failed when the bag arrived at v2.

Disable runs, each red then green:

disabled caught by
tenant may contain . or @ the_routing_template_renders_and_matches_alias_and_tenant
empty placeholder values allowed same
placeholders out of order allowed a_template_needs_numbered_placeholders_in_order_with_separators
empty separator allowed same
office mapped to another property every_synced_attribute_exists_on_both_sides_once
two AD attributes mapped to one cloud property same
Graph nulls dropped instead of kept as positions the_extension_attribute_bag_matches_ad
Graph bag slot set when every member is null same
AD empty members dropped instead of kept as positions extension_attributes_are_one_bag
AD multi-valued member takes the first value same
AD bag members reported as ignored same
bag_member returns an empty member same
bag_member 0-based same

Two findings from writing the tests:

  • A real bug. The test caught a@b@contoso.mail.onmicrosoft.com parsing to tenant b@contoso; the tenant is now checked for @ too.
  • A dead check. Disabling the template's render-back check stayed green, because the property holds by construction. The check was removed and the doc says why.

Open

  • Tenant consistency (one tenant per directory) is not a violation yet.
  • lance-graph does not read the bag yet; it has no observed field for it.

…nc map

exchange: AddressTemplate (numbered placeholders, render and strict match)
and ROUTING = {0}@{1}.mail.onmicrosoft.com; routing_parts returns (alias,
tenant). The alias is mailNickname.

violation: AddressRole and three invariants. AddressConflict: UPN, SMTP,
mail and routing addresses share one key space, so a UPN or SMTP address
that is another object's SMTP, mail or routing address conflicts, and so
does a mail held by another object (an admin account with mail set as a
password-reset target). RoutingNotInProxies: a remote mailbox must own its
routing address as an SMTP proxy. RoutingMismatch: the routing address must
be the template for the node's own alias.

ogar-az: SYNCED maps AD attributes to their cloud names, among them
physicalDeliveryOfficeName -> officeLocation and userAccountControl ->
accountEnabled. ogar-ad schema v4 adds physicalDeliveryOfficeName.

No executor: lance-graph computes these violations next. Adding Violation
variants does not break it (it only constructs violations).

A match strips the prefix, cuts at each separator and strips the suffix, so
re-rendering its values always reproduces the input. The disable run showed
the check could not fire.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds pooled extension-attribute bags to AD and Graph schemas, defines AD-to-cloud attribute mappings, and adds routing-address parsing and address-related violation types to the directory simulation crate.

Changes

Extension-attribute ingestion and sync mappings

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared bag contract and AD ingestion
crates/ogar-dir-core/src/schema.rs, crates/ogar-dir-core/src/pool.rs, crates/ogar-dir-core/src/lib.rs, crates/ogar-ad/src/lib.rs, crates/ogar-ad/tests/main.rs
The core defines pooled bags with 15 positional members and adds member lookup. The AD schema adds physicalDeliveryOfficeName and an extension-attribute bag. The encoder gathers numbered members into the bag and reports invalid UTF-8 or duplicate values. Tests cover the office attribute and bag behavior.
Graph schema and AD-to-cloud mappings
crates/ogar-az/src/lib.rs, crates/ogar-az/tests/main.rs
The Graph schema adds onPremisesExtensionAttributes in version 2. Public declarations define AD-to-cloud mappings and transforms. Tests check mapping entries and schema-version-based selection.
Graph bag encoding and validation
crates/ogar-az/src/lib.rs, crates/ogar-az/Cargo.toml, crates/ogar-az/tests/main.rs, docs/DIRECTORY-SIMULATION-POC.md
The Graph encoder stores numbered extension attributes as a bag when at least one member is nonempty. Tests compare its encoding with the AD bag encoding. Documentation describes the bag representation and ingestion changes.

Routing addresses and violations

Layer / File(s) Summary
Routing-address template and parsing
crates/ogar-dir-sim/src/exchange.rs, crates/ogar-dir-sim/src/lib.rs

An unusual AD attribute name can interrupt ingestion, and the bag documentation could lead callers to select the wrong member. Both corrections are localized; the PR is mergeable with owner awareness and follow-up.

Graph returns onPremisesExtensionAttributes as an object of fifteen
extensionAttributeN keys; AD holds them as fifteen separate attributes.
Both now land in one pooled slot of kind AttrKind::Bag: member n is
extensionAttribute(n+1), an empty member is absent, and a bag with no
values sets no slot. The member names are never stored, so AD and Graph
produce byte-identical bags and the pair syncs Same.

- ogar-dir-core: AttrKind::Bag, BAG_LEN = 15, ValuePool::bag_member
- ogar-ad v5: extensionAttribute (slot 16, Bag); members 1..15 are no
  longer reported as ignored; a multi-valued member is refused
- ogar-az v2: onPremisesExtensionAttributes (slot 18, Bag), added to
  SYNCED
- select_is_derived_from_the_schema now checks each version against
  the attributes that existed by then

Also drop the stale note that the executor does not compute the
address violations; lance-graph validate::address_rules does.

Reject invalid tenant labels in routing_parts.

If the tenant contains a space, routing_parts("alice@bad tenant.mail.onmicrosoft.com") returns Some. That tenant is not a DNS label. Validate the tenant as a DNS label, rather than excluding only @ and ., and add a malformed-tenant test.

Give objectSid an explicit representation transform.

SyncTransform::OnPremisesEvidence describes a copied value, but AD objectSid is binary and Graph onPremisesSecurityIdentifier is a SID string. A byte-for-byte copy cannot produce the declared Graph value. Add a binary-SID-to-string transform instead of labeling this pair as copied. (learn.microsoft.com)

Recognize numbered extension attributes in cloud_of.

If a caller passes the ingested AD name extensionAttribute7, cloud_of returns None. SYNCED contains only the synthetic bag name extensionAttribute. Map valid numbered names to that bag entry so the public lookup covers the attributes it describes.

Codex and CodeRabbit on #321, each reproduced by a failing test first:

- Codex P2 / CodeRabbit: the bag-member check parsed the suffix, so
  extensionAttribute01 counted as member 1 and was neither stored nor
  reported as ignored; it also sliced by byte length and could panic on a
  multi-byte name. ogar_dir_core::schema::bag_member_of accepts only the
  canonical spelling and uses a checked split.
- Codex P1: objectSid is binary in AD, onPremisesSecurityIdentifier is
  the S-1-... string in Graph. New SyncTransform::SecurityIdentifier and
  ogar_dir_core::sid::sid_to_string ([MS-DTYP] 2.4.2), tested against an
  independently computed vector and on malformed lengths.
- cloud_of resolves a numbered extension attribute to the bag entry,
  canonical spelling only.
- routing_parts requires the tenant to be a DNS label (letters, digits,
  hyphens), not just free of '@' and '.'.
- Doc: the bag's zero-based offset and bag_member's 1-based index are
  stated separately.
