Summary

Adds BENCHMARK_REPORT.md: a full comparison of arvik (post-audit main, incl. the TraceLayer fast-path gate) against axum 0.8 and actix-web 4 on identical workloads, measured with wrk, hey (Go), and ab.

Headline numbers (wrk 4t/256c/10s)

Mode arvik actix-web axum
Without middleware 255k req/s 275k 236k
With middleware 239k 🥇 234k 188k

The report documents methodology, middleware-stack equivalence, per-tool tables with latency percentiles, reproduction steps, and keeps the pre-optimization baseline as an appendix for transparency.

Type of Change

  • Documentation — no behavior change

Full benchmark comparison on identical workloads (Hello-World handler,
CORS + tracing middleware stack, loopback, release builds) using wrk,
hey, and ab.

Headline results for arvik @ main (351b057, post-audit + fast-path
gate):

- With middleware: 239k req/s (#1) — ahead of actix-web (234k) and
axum (188k); lowest middleware overhead of all three (-6.3% vs
  -15.1% / -20.2%)
- Without middleware: 255k req/s with the best p99 (3.44 ms)
- hey sweep: #1 in both modes (~105k req/s), lowest p95
- Most consistent framework across tools and modes

Includes methodology, per-tool tables with latency percentiles,
middleware-overhead comparison, reproduction steps, and the
pre-optimization baseline appendix documenting the impact of the
TraceLayer span-construction gate.
