Repos with many tags hang for long on startup

I have a repo with ~60K tags. gitk.cache is ~7MB. Every time I open gitk, even for a small range, it hangs for something like 30 seconds. Looks like gitk.cache is read synchronously. If I edit gitk and return before the call to getcache, it solves the problem (but then I don't have Follows and Precedes).

Is it possible to improve this?

Is it possible to make reading of gitk.cache async, so it doesn't block the application while reading?

I don't know. This is about reading a file. We have async readers elsewhere, but they are reading from a pipe.
