Licensing Notice

This project is authored by Jonathan D.A. Jewell (hyperpolymath).

Licence
-------

Hypatia is licensed under the **Mozilla Public License 2.0 (MPL-2.0)**.

  - Source files (.ex, .exs, .rs, .idr, .zig, .hs, shell, workflows)
    are governed by MPL-2.0, declared per-file via SPDX headers.
  - Documentation (.md, .adoc) is licensed CC-BY-SA-4.0, likewise
    declared per-file via SPDX headers.

The authoritative texts are:

  LICENSE                        MPL-2.0 (root, for licence detectors)
  LICENSES/MPL-2.0.txt           MPL-2.0
  LICENSES/CC-BY-SA-4.0.txt      CC-BY-SA-4.0

Where a file's SPDX header and this notice disagree, the SPDX header
governs that file.

A note on the Palimpsest Licence
--------------------------------

Earlier revisions of this repository were distributed under the
Palimpsest Licence (PMPL-1.0-or-later), and a small number of files may
still carry a PMPL SPDX header pending migration. PMPL is a *separate*
licence maintained at https://github.com/hyperpolymath/palimpsest-license
— it is not a variant, alias or extension of MPL-2.0, and its text is
not distributed with this repository.

The current licence of this project is MPL-2.0. Any file still bearing a
PMPL header is a migration defect, tracked in docs/DEBT-REGISTER.md (L-2),
not a statement that PMPL terms apply to the project as a whole.

(An earlier version of this NOTICE conflated the two licences — it
described "the Palimpsest License (MPL-2.0)" as "a philosophical
extension of the Mozilla Public License 2.0" and pointed at
LICENSES/MPL-2.0.txt for "the full PMPL text". That was the residue of an
incomplete find-and-replace and was corrected on 2026-08-07.)
