Saving location data

I like Reitti and Owntrack is connecting to it really reliably.

But, right now Reitti is my only repository for my location data and I'm concerned about, I guess, lock in and having some automated way of doing back ups without having to drop down to the command line...

I'm curious what other folks are doing about saving location data? I was thinking about using Owntrack server, maybe? Any other ideas?

I would also recommend to store the the raw data somewhere, despite reitti having the ability to give you that, it is never false to have a backup.

What I do is:

• using gpslogger which not only sends the data into reitti, also stores the data on the device as gpx file for every day
• then I sync also these gpx files to a ownclouds folder
• that way I have a backup of all the raw data which is saved somewhere else

Afaik Owntracks does not support that. But you could theoretically setup the Owntracks Recorder. This would store everything on your server first. Then connect reitti to the recorder. You will loose the display of your location in the Owntracks App but if you can live with that, that would be a doable way.

On a previous phone I used gpslogger to store the gpx files locally and then sync them to nextcloud/owncloud as well but for some reason gpslogger is a real battery hog on my current phone so switched to Owntrack.

I'll try Owntrack recorder but was I was also interested in other options. I didn't think I was the only one who wanted to save the original data so thought there might be other ways of doing it...

I am only aware of these two. For the battery issue of GPSLogger. V136 introduced the ability to send the gpx file as a whole into reitti. I am planning on switching the autoconfigure button to that in #1122
That should help getting a little bit more life out of the battery, since right now it sends it line by line which is not a good way of doing it since it has to open/close a connection for every point which, especially at the end of the day, where it resends all previous points only for reitti to ignore them, makes no sense.

I will keep you updated as soon as I come along that feature for testing.

I theory you can use it right now, by configuring it to send the data against the GPX Import but atm you are on your own since I did not manage to write the docs for it.

I seem to remember enabling the option to send a single gpx when testing gpslogger but it didn't work for me. I don't remember the details as to why it didn't work but I did switch back to Owntracks.

I've now set up the owntrack recorder and have reitti connecting to it (I think) so I may have a method for getting the data I want.
