App crash due to NPE on BluetoothGatt.writeCharacteristic

Hello,
my app was crashing with this stacktrace:

Fatal Exception: java.lang.NullPointerException: Attempt to invoke virtual method 'boolean android.bluetooth.BluetoothGatt.writeCharacteristic(android.bluetooth.BluetoothGattCharacteristic)' on a null object reference
