Share button: Prompt to include timestamp when sharing

Feature description

When using the share button the user should be prompted if he wants to include the timestamp in the link.

Why do you want this feature?

When sharing a YouTube link from within the app there are currently two identical looking share buttons that do different things. One shares including the current video timestamp, one shares without.

I never memorize this, it is not at all intuitive to have the same button with different functions unlabelled nearby each other and whenever I use the more obvious / always present share button on top I accidentally share it with a timestamp, having to explain to my contacts that I did not mean to put one.

This was already discussed in #7835 which unfortunately was closed by the admins without them opening a new ticket that discusses this issue (This is always the task of an admin, in my view. From my experience as a user it is highly discouraging to bring up a problem to then be told "You worded this wrong, if you want to create a new ticket").

I would be okay with this solution as long as both buttons are next to each other. (Similarly easy to access. If one of them is less easy to access I think it should be the timestamped version)

Not sure what you try to mean. But playback progress is related to player. So, the 'Share' button within player should share link with timestamp.

I mean that the "share with timestamp" button is at the very top, while the "share without timestamp" button is hidden in a collapsible menu. To me this is not intuitive (including the clock icon). What you describe I would call a mnemonic. It helps to remember the placement of each button, but does not explain why it is solved like that in the first place. I am highly against leaving their positions as they are now and would love to hear other users opinion on this.

Off-topic, but:

From my experience as a user it is highly discouraging to bring up a problem to then be told "You worded this wrong, if you want to create a new ticket").

From the user perspective, you have to open one new issue.

From the maintainer perspective, we would have to open dozens, and that's assuming we've perfectly understood what the user intended to say, which is rarer than you might think.

I'm coining a 'FOSS maintainers' law': "Any task that can be off-loaded to the user, should be." Maintainers are usually overburdened, as it is.

One solution is to use a different icon for the timestamp-share button.

Another is that both buttons could prompt the user, making them the same in functionality.

@SameenAhnaf It's not. That issue is about removing tracking or other unnecessary parameters. This is only about timestamps.

All of this started from #2000: the issue wanted to implement this "sharing with timestamp" feature, and the solution was adding a top sharing button that shares with timestamp while the sharing button below remains unchanged.

And that leaves the problem we are talking right now: the two similar sharing button have different function but there are no hints.

My suggestion:

• add a check box at the menu after touch the sharing button for user to determine whether to share with timestamp or not
• the two sharing button should work the same
• add a setting to determine by default the check box is selected or not

Back when the timestamp-share button was added, the situation was very different. There was a prominent share button in the top bar which you could use to share the video URL immediately, without opening the video. If you wanted to share a timestamped URL specifically, you could expand the arrow menu in the player and use the button there instead. Since you had to open the player anyway to be able to seek to a timestamp and get the correct URL, placing the button inside the player was not an issue.

But after the unified player was implemented, that top bar share button was removed completely. It was later added to the expanded button list below the main player, but that resulted in it being hidden from the average user.

This is the real problem.

For me, the solution is in two parts:

A clock icon on the bottom right corner of Share button could be included for sharing with playback progress

This should be done regardless. The two share buttons should definitely look different. But I don't know if there is a standard Material icon available for this.

The second part would be to find a good place for the plain old share button somewhere on the video details page, rather than being hidden by an expandable arrow.

Another is that both buttons could prompt the user, making them the same in functionality.

After rethinking, I don't agree with this option anymore. Making the share button visible is a far more superior solution.

I doubt the prompt to be an inferior solution: Question is how often is the share function used compared to the clutter that two buttons (next to each other?) create. I would either go with two buttons next to each other or a prompt, while a prompt would mean one less icon on the screen.

What about a long press? Single tap shares the link, long press asks if you want to include the timestamp and you could probably even add a checkbox "don't ask again" so that a long press always shares the timestamp.

Just find this issue as I wanted to submit one to ask a way to add timestamp when sharing.
After one year of using NewPipe I discovered reading this thread that there's a way of doing this ! But ... really, this is really hidden and counter intuitive having 2 identical buttons that does the same function (sharing the link) that doesn't have the same behavior !

My suggestion:

* add a check box at the menu after touch the sharing button for user to determine whether to share with timestamp or not

* the two sharing button should work the same

* add a setting to determine by default the check box is selected or not
