Steps to reproduce the bug

1. Find a stream that you've already watched but didn't finish (and it shows the red line under it showing how much you've watched); alternatively make one by playing something but not finished it
2. Close the player, then go to history and play the stream again

Expected behavior

Stream plays from the last playback position as displayed by the red line under the thumbnail

Actual behavior

It resumes from the beginning

As an aside, youtube itself (at least the desktop / website version) started doing the same to me at approximately the same time. I don't know whether that's related.

@absurdlylongusername : yes, can confirm the same issue.

In 0.28.2, if you pause a video, close it, then go to the "Hamburger menu", then "History", then tap on any video that has been played to a certain point, they all resume from the beginning.

Though NewPipe has long had a related issue with videos paused for 5-10 minutes or longer (list of tickets here) never being able to resume where they were up-to. So maybe if the team decide to fix this, they could finally fix the other resumption issue also? 🙏🏻

Yes, this is very annoying indeed, so I took it in my own hands in my forked repo, resume branch.

Here is the relevant commit I've made. I used Github Copilot (Claude Sonnet 4) to fix the issue. I have never written any Kotlin/Java code before, I have no clue what the code is doing. Except debugging and prompting the copilot, but I no longer experience the resume bug. The commit contains code the AI wrote and AI generated summary.

It might have something to do with the recovery position value set to a very large negative number or 0ms and when the player seek into, it goes to the beginning.

Note: this is not Newpipe, but a fork of it called Tubular, which has built-in SponsorBlocks and Return YouTube Dislikes. Do not ask Tubular or NewPipe devs or open new issues regarding my contribution.

The CI action failed, but building it with Android studio manually works. You can try this package. You can also build it manually in Android Studio,

You may need to change the app name and Id and version number if you currently have Tubular installed to avoid conflicts.

I will not make a PR because AI work like such is against the contributing guideline. All I want to do is watch YouTube, and it seems the AI contribution has fixed the problem.

I am against AI aswell. But I sympathize with your goals. Too bad one has to fork a project just to fix a bug they don't want to fix though. At present, I have to keep both NP and PipePipe installed for that. Really annoying.
