Steps to reproduce the bug

1. Add multiple languages to Android System (for example English (US) as primary and Japanese as secondary)
2. Open NewPipe and see some UI texts are in mixed languages

Expected behavior

It should show UI Elements in the primary language set in Android System

Actual behavior

UI Elements are shown in mixed language

(Mainly English and a bit of Japanese, but sometimes almost every UI element is in Japanese, it's random)

This bug occurs with other apps but it can be resolved by adding another variation of English as secondary language and putting Japanese as third (example: 1. English (US) 2. English (UK) 3. Japanese)

The affected device is a Foldable but it shouldn't affect this bug in particular

Can you please show what settings do you have in settings->content->{app language,content language} and etc?

Could you please try to install nightly version (it will be installed alongside main app so don't worry about your data in main app) and see tell if you can reproduce it from there from clean install?

By the way, the first time I go to settings etc it's usually in English, it's the second time I access that it often (or almost always) that it shows elements in Japanese

EDIT: So I tried to experiment with nightly version, for example importing database only, database + settings or deleting data and do all the same stuff as before and now I can't replicate the bug (everything seems to work completely ok now with nightly version) so I really don't know what's happening

So you can replicate the bug in nightly on fresh install but can't do after importing settings or db? (would be nice to know have a better pinpoint settings or db or data delete)?

Since android 13 you can also set per app language. If your device/os supports (and it probably should), newpipe will open androids builtin app chooser and will set exactly that per app setting but to be sure could you please also look on it via settings? What is per app language you see via system settings?

Sorry if I was not clear. Basically I was able to replicate the bug with nightly version on the first run.
Later I tried to do some experimentation and suddenly the bug did not occur again. Not saying that if I clear app data I can replicate the bug. It was a only one-time occurrence. Thats why I said that I really don't know what's happening (more info in the end)

For the system language settings I have several which include in order:

1. English (US) - System Default
2. English (UK)
3. Japanese
4. Spanish (Spain)
5. French (France)
6. Italian (Italy)
7. Russian (Russia)

I know I can change language per-app, in fact my first idea was to set explicitly English (US) as the language to use (since System Default was causing this issue) but the bug was still occurring even after

I tried to do some other experimentation now and currently the behaviour is like this:

• First Case

1. Set the app language to System Default
2. Everything works as intended, no mixed language
   (This was not the case in the beginning, since I opened this issue specifically for this reason)

• Second Case

1. Set the app language to English (US) or (UK)
2. UI Elements are in mixed English + Japanese
   (This is as I described in this issue)

• Third Case

1. Set the app language to anything that's not English (for example Italian)
2. UI Elements are shown only in the language specified (in this case Italian)

Sorry if my explanation is not good, I tried to put every info I got currently. Hope it helps

Thanks. Info is very extensive but I still can't reproduce the issue. Do you have access to any other devices and can you reproduce the bug there? The only thing I can imagine is that bug is software/device specific ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have the same issue, but with Turkish. I do reside in Turkey, but interestingly, I don't have Turkish language as a first OR secondary language on either my phone or the app.

It is even more weird. But it probably gives a way to toy around this. Also it would be nice to know your phone model (because maybe it is a bug of only samsungs or anything still device specific)

Do you have any kind of location enabled, so your os can try to insert language from your location? What is your setting for Date/Time -> Time Zone -> Region?

As probably the last resort: for testing could you please install https://f-droid.org/en/packages/cl.coders.faketraveler/ select it in android developer options and change location somewhere to paris fro example? And then run newpipe?

I have location usually disabled and for Region, I have manually set to Italy

I'll try to test it tomorrow, I'll also check on other Android devices I have to see if it's Samsung specific. Thanks for the suggestions!

My region is actually set to Turkey. But something even more confusing happened when I switched my System Language from UK English to US English, and the issue got resolved. And then I switched back to UK English, and I can no longer replicate it, the interface is working as expected now.

This is weird, cause I hadn't experienced this with any of my other apps, or with NewPipe before the 0.28.1 release.

Tested changing location, no change observed in the behaviour...

BTW today the app started again to show some japanese elements even when the default language is set to System Default (First Case that I described before)

And on another Android device that I have, which is a Realme X2 Pro with crDroid 12.2 (Android 16), a custom ROM based on AOSP, the bug doesn't seem to occur (for now at least)

Yeah, I too. I noticed it on Lineage os (waydroid) but it behaves for me both ways but can't understand when and which will be...

To be honest I've already forgot about this issue. What I can say is that I honestly don't know. I have some educated guess maybe it will be useful for someone who will try to triage it:

1. I think it is system related
2. The code which is responsible for language/locale is very weird for me. Maybe it is only because I didn't try to understand it fully but I didn't find centralized place where it happens. I mean I've seen there lots of fallbacks half of which could call another existing (in newpipe) function. And also I doubt about ordering of system provided lists. Maybe they differ on every invocation on some systems and so on those systems it is like random for each line? Idk. Probably it is all wrong but maybe....
