That is a NewPipe feature (Settings —> Video and audio —> Use external video player). A user may want to use an external video player for several reasons. For example an external video player may provide a better user experience for the user.

The main reason for me is to be able to use VLC to cast the video to a chromecast device.

Agree with this. Could be helpful to watch HD videos. Actually I can ear audio only with 360 res. Any other res means no audio, no matter the app settings nor the app used. Same with Tubolar. Hope this will be fixed. Thanks for great app.

This is a technical limitation: YouTube only provides video-only and audio-only streams, and there is currently no (standard) way to pass both URLs at the same to VLC or other media apps. Closing as won't fix unfortunately.
