Checklist

  • I made sure that there are no existing issues - open or closed - which I could contribute my information to.
  • I have read the FAQ and my problem isn't listed.
  • I'm aware that this is a request for NewPipe itself and that requests for adding a new service need to be made at NewPipeExtractor.
  • I have taken the time to fill in all the required details. I understand that the feature request will be dismissed otherwise.
  • This issue contains only one feature request.
  • I have read and understood the contribution guidelines.

Feature description

Support various keyboard shortcuts:

  • Play/Pause (Spacebar works but tints the screen)
  • Seek backward/forward (Arrow keys initiate jumps between UI elements)
  • Decrease/increase current playback speed (super useful to watch lectures)
  • Toggle fast-forward during silence (again, awesome feature that I can't find anywhere else)
  • Toggle fullscreen
  • Toggle subtitles
  • Personally I find very useful 1-frame steps:
    • Step forward. Pressing once will pause, every consecutive press will play one frame and then go into pause mode again.
    • Step backward. Pressing once will pause, every consecutive press will play one frame in reverse and then go into pause mode again.

Other possible shortcuts: https://mpv.io/manual/master/, https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7631406.

In particular I'd like it to work with physical keyboards. I don't know if it's any different for the app.

Why do you want this feature?

I'm using Samsung Tab S8+ with their Book Cover Keyboard. I'd like to control the playback from the keyboard without touching the screen or moving the cursor with the touchpad. It will save tons of time.

Additional information

At the very least support "seek backward/forward" with Arrow keys. Other shortcuts are not that critical. Although it would be awesome to have "Decrease/increase current playback speed" shortcuts directly on some keys, for example I set up s/d keys in Video Speed Controller (Firefox on laptop) for that purpose and use it constantly to skim through familiar contents of videos.
