From 66166af540e72181242b246f7fbbb6c2a5b10a62 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Ayla Croft Date: Thu, 24 Sep 2026 11:35:35 -0400 Subject: [PATCH] feat(s029): hold a tool whose definition changed after it was approved A server whose tool definitions change after the owner approved them is holding an approval the owner never gave, and nothing in the protocol requires a server to announce that it changed one. Held means not registered. The first design registered the tool and raised a notice, which is a warning about a tool that is already callable and so arrives after the call it should have stopped. The digest covers name, description, input schema and annotations in RFC 8785 canonical form, the same canonicalisation the approval fingerprint uses. The description is in it deliberately: it is what the model reads when deciding whether to call a tool and with what, so a server that keeps the schema byte-identical and rewrites the description has changed the tool completely without changing one field of its interface. The test for that changes the description alone and asserts the schemas are equal. It is a second digest rather than the registry's existing one, which hashes term_to_binary. That is right for telling one in-memory entry from another within a run and wrong for a baseline written to disk and compared weeks later: the external term format is not guaranteed stable across OTP releases, so an upgrade would read as drift on every tool at once. That is the worst false positive available here, because it trains the owner to clear a screen of notices without reading them. The permissions page lists what is held with the changed fields, each showing what it was and what it is now. Accepting makes the definition the baseline and keeps the date the tool was first seen. Leaving it held clears the notice without forgiving the server: the next listing raises the same change again. The receipt and the telemetry event name the fields that changed and never their values. A description is content, and the point of holding the tool is that its new content has not been read by anyone entitled to approve it. From the connectome research's A3(c), implemented by digest rather than by the fly Bloom filter it proposes, on its own distinction: a digest answers is this byte-for-byte what I approved, and drift asks exactly that. The screenshot found what the tests could not: both sides of a changed schema rendered with inspect, so a reader had to parse Elixir map syntax to answer a question about a JSON document. The assertions passed either way. mix gate: 722 passed, 18 excluded; coverage 80.31%, unchanged.
