how does this work to resolve a domain to an Ip address?

I have home assistant installed in a virtual box on Kubuntu. The networking is bridged, so the VM gets a local IP address. Through the HA app store, I installed an app called homeaccessanywhere.com You sign up, get your token and subdomain, and then enter those into the app on HA and your are done. You can access your HA server from anywhere in the world.

So for example, my URL would be example.homeaccessanywhere.com I use this instead of duck dns, as I could not get duck dns to work.

The problem I am having, is I installed a wiki called bookstacks onto HA through the App store. I can get to the wiki with a local ip address and port of 192.168.50.203:2665

I am not able to access the wiki outside of my local network. I looked at your app, and I could not see a way to get it to work for what I need. Can it do what I want?

Yes, MultiAppProxy should work for your use case. At least it is designe for such usecase but not tested with homeaccessanywhere

From your description, HomeAccessAnywhere only exposes your Home Assistant instance. BookStack is running as a separate web application on port 2665, so it is not automatically reachable through your Home Assistant remote URL (addon can use ingress and that would solve your problem directly but i'm not sure the BookStack addon dev activity is very active

You can create a MultiAppProxy entry that points to:

The below is what i get now after logging in, though I am not sure that is your problem. I think it is something on my side, how to fix I dont know.

Now that I have played with your app, I love it, creates all kinds of shortcuts. Thanks for making it.

Hi @robertsaron, thanks for coming back with the details. That error message is exactly what I needed, and both of your problems should now be addressed.

They were two separate issues, so here is what each one was.

1. The login screen "looks way off"

BookStack serves its stylesheets from absolute paths, so behind a proxy prefix the browser was looking for them in the wrong place. Fixed in 1.3.0: stylesheets are rewritten, and a small runtime patch corrects the URLs an app builds in JavaScript. There is no option to enable, it just works.

2. homeassistant's server IP address could not be found

After login, BookStack redirects to a URL it builds from the Host header it received. Behind the ingress that header can carry an internal name, which your browser cannot resolve. Fixed in 1.3.1, released just now: the proxy forwards the host you actually typed instead, and absolute redirects pointing back at your own domain get the proxy path added.

So: update to 1.3.1, and your app entry can be shortened, since path is now derived from the name and rewrite: false is the default:

One honest caveat. The redirect fix relies on your setup forwarding the X-Forwarded-Host header, and I cannot tell from here whether your tunnel does. If login still sends you to an unreachable address after updating, the fallback is on the BookStack side. Its add-on has no dedicated APP_URL option but accepts arbitrary environment variables:

<TOKEN> is the ingress token of Multi-App Proxy, visible in the browser address bar when the portal is open. Note that it changes if you ever reinstall the add-on, which is exactly why I would rather fix it in the proxy.

If anything still misbehaves, set debug: true at the top of the configuration: the add-on log will print [AUTO] ... lines showing what was detected for your instance, and that would tell me a lot.

Logs before uninstalling NGINX Proxy manager, it was not started. I do not have the X-Forwarded-Host in my configuration.yaml files. I can put what ever you want in there, Just let me know what to COPY and PASTE. What should I put in the multiproxy yaml file? I set BookStack up behind the add-on on my own instance, and I have a correction to make to my previous comment. I presented APP_URL as a fallback you would probably not need. It is not optional: BookStack needs it. Here is what actually works, end to end.

1. Update Multi-App Proxy to 1.3.1, then use this entry, which is all the proxy side needs:

2. Read your ingress path from the add-on log. With debug: true set, the Multi-App Proxy log prints this at startup:

That second line is exactly what goes after your domain, /bookstack included. Copy it as-is.

3. In the BookStack add-on configuration, set APP_URL. It has no dedicated option but accepts arbitrary environment variables:

Restart BookStack afterwards.

Why this one cannot be avoided. The proxy rewrites the paths an app leaves in its HTML, which is what fixed your broken login styling in 1.3.0. But BookStack does not emit paths, it emits fully formed absolute URLs built from its own configured base. There is nothing for the proxy to rewrite in them, and no way for it to know that a given absolute URL was meant to be yours rather than a deliberate link elsewhere. Only BookStack knows where it lives, so it has to be told once.

Two things to be careful about, both learned the hard way on my own instance:

• Get the scheme exactly right. I typo'd hhttp:// instead of https:// and every stylesheet and script failed with ERR_UNKNOWN_URL_SCHEME, while the page still half-rendered so it looked merely broken rather than misconfigured. Build the value as https:// plus your domain plus the line copied from the log, and retype nothing.
• The token changes if you ever reinstall Multi-App Proxy, and APP_URL then points at a dead path. If BookStack breaks after a reinstall, this is the first thing to check.

You do not need NGINX Proxy Manager at all, and you were right to uninstall it. It solves a different problem, terminating a domain and its certificate in front of Home Assistant. You already have remote access through homeaccessanywhere, and Multi-App Proxy reaches BookStack from inside Home Assistant over the ingress, so nothing in this setup needs a second reverse proxy. Adding one would only give you a third layer to configure and a third place for headers to go missing.

It was also never involved in what you were seeing. The /var/log/nginx/access.log lines you sent are Multi-App Proxy's own nginx, which the add-on runs internally, and the client 172.30.32.2 in them is the Home Assistant supervisor. That is why your two log blocks, before and after uninstalling NPM, are identical: it was stopped, so it was never on the path.

And you have nothing to copy and paste for X-Forwarded-Host. That header does not belong in configuration.yaml, nor in any add-on YAML. It is emitted by whatever sits in front of Home Assistant, in your case the homeaccessanywhere tunnel, and the add-on reads it when it arrives. It was a note about what I could not verify remotely, not a step for you.

If something is still off once you are logged in, one more thing worth knowing: BookStack sends a Content-Security-Policy that blocks a small script the proxy injects to correct URLs built in JavaScript. It does not affect the login page, but if part of the interface loads from the wrong place, add hide_csp: true to the entry above.

And if it still fails, debug: true is already in the config above, so the add-on log will print [AUTO] ... lines at startup. Those plus the URL your browser lands on right after you submit the login form would tell me the rest.

Thanks for getting back to me. I tried various ways to enter in the information, and I must be doing something wrong. Cause bookstack is still the same, and when entering in the info into the multiproxy yaml, it gets wiped out. I am waiting on DNS propagation. As I got a domain, and am going to use that to spin up a private web server, for my wiki and other things. If you still want to pursue it is cool, happy to work on it. but if not it is all good.
