Radio-frequency (RF) is becoming a first-class citizen of Home Assistant and can send commands #102

Description

Problem statement

With the recent progress on

adding support for radio-frequency (RF) and making it become a first-class citizen of Home Assistant as well feels like a natural next step.

Following the recent general proxying approach

proxying RF basically rounds up the next batch to further expand to

This opportunity is based on the architecture discussion around adding

and aims to add RF sending support to Home Assistant and thus establish a sound foundation to further expand upon.

Community signals

Scope & Boundaries

In scope

  • Definition of supported RF frequencies complying with regulatory frameworks (FCC/ETSI, aim for min. 300-450mhz)
  • Setup flow within Home Assistant
    • Discovery -> Enable + region selection for frequency -> Add integration -> Configure integration
  • Sending of RF signals
  • Having at least 1 reference integration for RF sending available
  • Ideally, to reach a broader user audience we aim to have a reference integration for some of the most widely used appliance categories such as TV, AC, AV receiver / amplifier, etc.
  • This not only provides our our community a good baseline to further expand upon but also eases the further usage of RF as such within Home Assistant by reviving some of the legacy devices out in user's homes - perfectly in-line with our goal of sustainability

Not in scope

  • Receiving of RF signals (to be added in a later step)
  • Handling of RF encryption, instead focus on simpler protocols
