[Bug]: Can't use with ChatGPT subscription

Unable to use product with only ChatGPT subscription. Error messages occur during use

Steps to reproduce

I've signed in successfully to Open CoDesign using ChatGPT subscription. I went through the Oauth dance, and it seems I've signed in. Before an API provider in settings, If I try to run a prompt, it gives an error saying "Onboarding is not complete."

If I go back to settings and choose Add Provider/Import from Codex, then I get an Import Failed message:

Detected Codex ChatGPT subscription login (auth_mode: chatgpt). It cannot be imported as an API-key provider yet — the "Sign in with ChatGPT subscription" feature is still being polished and will ship in the next release. For now, configure [model_providers] in ~/.codex/config.toml manually, or switch to API-key mode in Codex.

Thanks for filing this — the two errors are connected and you haven't done anything wrong.

What's happening

• "Onboarding is not complete." means the app doesn't have a runnable API provider configured yet. The ChatGPT OAuth sign-in by itself is not currently being recognized as a provider by the 0.2.0 onboarding/provider flow.
• When you try Add Provider → Import from Codex, the import path detects the subscription login (auth_mode: chatgpt) and refuses to import it as an API-key provider. That in-app error says the ChatGPT subscription import path is still being polished and will ship in the next release.

Why it's confusing

The public README says v0.1.4 added "ChatGPT Plus/Codex subscription support" and the product description mentions "direct ChatGPT Plus / Pro / Team subscription sign-in for Codex models." The v0.2.0 release notes also mention ChatGPT OAuth error-message improvements. But the error text in 0.2.0 is the current source of truth for this build: the chatgpt auth mode is not yet importable as an API-key provider. So the FAQ/docs are ahead of the shipped behavior here — this looks like a valid product/docs mismatch rather than a mistake on your side.

Workaround for 0.2.0

• For now you need at least one API-key provider. Add an OpenAI (or Anthropic/Gemini/OpenAI-compatible) API key in Settings → Providers, or configure [model_providers] in ~/.codex/config.toml with an API-key auth mode and import that.
• If you only have a ChatGPT subscription and no API key, you may be blocked until the next release ships the completed chatgpt auth import path.

Need more info (optional, helps maintainers)

• If you can attach app logs or a diagnostics bundle from Help → Diagnostics, it would help show whether the OAuth step left a partial provider record.
• Does your ~/.codex/config.toml currently use auth_mode = "chatgpt", or are you on API-key mode?
