Commercial Licensing Guide

This guide explains when Forge can be used under GPL and when a commercial license is typically needed.

This document is informational and not legal advice.

Licensing Model

  • Forge source code is offered under GPL-3.0-or-later.
  • Forge source code is also available under a commercial license from CrowdWare.
  • SML and SMS are open languages. You can write and use SML/SMS files for your own projects.

Typical Scenarios

  1. Your users install Forge Runner themselves, and you only ship your SML/SMS project content.

    • Usually no commercial Forge license is needed from CrowdWare.
    • You still need to respect licenses of any third-party assets or dependencies you distribute.
  2. You bundle or redistribute Forge code/runtime with your own product.

    • You can comply with GPL obligations and distribute under GPL terms.
    • If you want to keep your distributed product proprietary, obtain a commercial license from CrowdWare.
